Advanced chips generated 79% of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's third-quarter wafer revenue. The figure comes from a TradingView chart review of the company's latest quarterly disclosure, and it marks the degree to which leading-edge silicon now anchors the foundry's business.
The number is a share, not a dollar amount. It states that nearly four of every five dollars TSMC earned from wafers in the quarter came from its most advanced chip categories. The remaining 21% came from mature and specialty process technologies.
What does the 79% share tell investors?
It tells them where the pricing power sits. Revenue concentrated at the leading edge means TSMC's results now track demand for the most expensive wafers it sells. Smartphone and high-performance computing customers buy those wafers. When those customers order, the revenue mix shifts further toward advanced nodes.
The share also compresses the effect of mature-node softness. If older process technologies sell weakly, the damage to total revenue is bounded by that 21% slice. A single percentage point of mix shift toward advanced chips carries more revenue weight than a point shift anywhere else in the portfolio.
For comparison, a foundry whose revenue split ran the other way — 79% mature, 21% advanced — would look to commodity pricing cycles rather than flagship product launches to explain its quarter. TSMC's mix points the analysis in the opposite direction.
How does this fit TSMC's recent trajectory?
The 79% share extends a multi-year trend. Each quarterly report from the company has shown advanced technologies taking a larger portion of wafer revenue as customers move designs to finer process geometries. The TradingView charts visualize that migration in the Q3 numbers.
The trend has a structural driver. Chip designers working on AI accelerators, flagship mobile processors and datacenter parts can only source leading-edge capacity from a small set of suppliers, and TSMC holds the largest share of that capacity. Demand at the leading edge therefore converts directly into revenue share.
The composition of the advanced category matters for reading the figure. TSMC groups its most advanced process technologies together in its revenue breakdown, so the 79% covers the leading-edge family as a whole rather than any single node. Investors watching the chart set should treat it as a mix indicator, not a node-by-node scorecard.
What should readers watch next?
Watch the fourth-quarter share. If advanced chips hold near 79% or push higher, it signals sustained demand from AI and flagship-device customers. A decline would suggest either softer leading-edge orders or a recovery in mature-node pricing that rebuilds the older side of the mix.
The dollar figures behind the share will matter as much as the share itself. A stable 79% on growing total revenue is a stronger signal than a rising share on flat sales, because it means leading-edge volume expanded rather than the rest of the portfolio shrinking.
The competitive backdrop frames the stakes. Rival foundries are investing heavily to qualify their own advanced processes, and TSMC's ability to keep nearly four-fifths of wafer revenue at the leading edge is the clearest measure of whether that challenge has begun to bite.
