Amazon Rebuilds Alexa Home Map as Interactive 3D Replica
Amazon's redesigned Alexa Home Map turns the connected home into a LiDAR-scanned 3D replica with live Ring camera views, a 24-hour timeline and real-time device animation. Preview begins later this year.

Amazon has rebuilt the Alexa Home Map as an interactive 3D view of the entire property, replacing the flat 2D map it introduced to the Alexa app in 2023. The redesign covers the home interior and, for the first time, its surroundings, using compatible Ring cameras to render a 360-degree exterior that animates cars and people moving nearby in real time.
The new interface visually resembles Samsung's SmartThings Map View. It shows the exact location of Echo devices, Ring and Blink cameras, Fire TV hardware, lights, locks, thermostats and other connected products on one map. Amazon has not disclosed engineering details of the rendering pipeline, but the upgrade is a considerable visual step from the 2023 map.
What can users control from the map?
Users can run core device functions directly from the map view. They can adjust speaker volume or pull up a security camera feed without leaving the interface. Some states update dynamically: active speakers display dancing music notes, and switched-on smart lights glow in a color that matches their current setting.
The exterior view works through motion detection. When a camera detects movement, a small live preview appears on the map. An interactive timeline lets users rewind the last 24 hours across every camera at once, so they can check package delivery times and other movements while away from home. The map also renders weather effects that match real conditions outside, and Amazon says themed modes for Halloween and Christmas are planned.
How much setup does the 3D model require?
The map is a digital replica of the user's specific house, and setup is substantial. Amazon pulls a 3D model of the house and neighborhood from Mapbox automatically, using the customer's address. Users must then walk through every room and scan it to capture an accurate interior layout.
Scanning currently requires an iPhone with a LiDAR or structured-light sensor. Amazon said it is testing a plain-video scanner for both iOS and Android that would remove the iPhone hardware requirement. Existing Map View maps cannot be repurposed, so all users must repeat the scan process. Amazon says an average home takes between 15 and 20 minutes to scan.
Once the model is built, users drag devices onto it from the app tray. The map supports multiple floors and displays furniture placement. Viewing options include light and dark modes and a filter that isolates specific device categories such as lights.
When and where will it ship?
The new Alexa Home Map will start rolling out in preview "later this year." Amazon has not specified a date. Availability covers a broad device set:
- The iOS Alexa Home Map, Alexa and Ring apps
- The new Alexa Tablets
- The Ember Artline Fire TV
- Larger Echo Show devices, including the new Echo Show 16
The rollout positions Amazon more directly against Samsung's SmartThings Map View, which established the 3D home-replica category. The competitive question now hinges on adoption: the 15-to-20-minute LiDAR scan requirement narrows the initial audience to recent iPhone owners until the plain-video scanner reaches iOS and Android.
