Anthropic’s $161.2B Broadcom Lease Gains Financial Support

Anthropic has committed $161.2 billion to five-year Broadcom leases for TPU-based compute, and its S-1 reports $131.8 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments.
Anthropic later updated its S-1 on Nov. 2, giving the public its first clean look at the AI company’s finances. Broadcom expects Anthropic to become its largest XPU customer in 2027. The customer ranking remains a forward-looking expectation.
What does the Broadcom agreement require?
The five-year master equipment leases provide access to tensor processing unit-based compute. Anthropic’s total rent payments over their life will be about $161.2 billion, excluding interest.
Anthropic stated: “the Lease Arrangements are non-cancelable by either party during the applicable lease period except by the lessor in the case of a default.” The language makes the obligation firm for the applicable lease period, subject to the stated default exception.
Can Anthropic fund the Broadcom leases?
As of Sept. 30, Anthropic held approximately $131.8 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments. That liquidity can support payments in the near term. It does not guarantee full performance across the lease term.
The filing also shows substantial operating improvement:
- Revenue: $33.24 billion in the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2026, an increase of more than 1,200% from the prior-year period.
- Operating loss: The loss narrowed by more than 75%, from $5.22 billion to $1.26 billion. The operating margin improved from negative 205% to negative 4%.
- Adjusted operating profit: Positive at $4.08 billion, with a 12% margin, compared with a negative 123% margin in the same 2025 period.
- Operating cash flow: Positive at $6.57 billion for the nine-month period.
Anthropic expects its GAAP and adjusted operating margins to fluctuate as additional compute arrives. Its adjusted operating margin fell from 19% in the second quarter to 15% in the third quarter. Anthropic added $5 billion of compute under short-term commitments during that period.
The filing supports Anthropic’s ability to finance the Broadcom agreement while investors assess its path to scaled profitability. Contractual payments, however, remain due regardless of near-term operating volatility.
Which other contracts compete for cash?
Alongside Broadcom, Anthropic disclosed these compute commitments:
- Google: At least $121.3 billion with the Alphabet subsidiary.
- Amazon: At least $110 billion with Amazon.com.
- Microsoft: At least $44.9 billion.
The analysis describes these agreements as largely non-cancelable, similar to the Broadcom leases. Together, the Google, Amazon, Microsoft and SpaceX contracts run several times the value of the Broadcom agreement.
Anthropic also has an agreement worth up to $120.5 billion with SpaceX. Its initial non-cancelable periods end in January 2027 and March 2027. Anthropic said: “each agreement may be cancelled by either party upon 90 days’ advance written notice.”
Tens of billions more are committed to private neo-cloud providers Nscale and Lambda. All of these contracts extend into at least 2029, with some running as late as 2036. The SpaceX provisions provide Anthropic with more spending flexibility than its Broadcom leases. MarketBeat’s analysis says the company could cancel flexible compute agreements before defaulting on Broadcom.
Can an IPO delay complicate funding?
MarketBeat reports that Anthropic could delay its IPO following the Nov. 5 technology sell-off. Some investors favor a valuation closer to $1 trillion. The reported target remains $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion, with a potential raise of $100 billion or more.
A lower valuation would reduce prospective IPO proceeds and could leave Anthropic with less cash for suppliers. MarketBeat expects the company’s liquidity to rise significantly after an IPO, but that outcome depends on the offering proceeding at a favorable valuation.
The analysis calls a delay potentially prudent while market volatility persists and Anthropic retains substantial cash. Continued profitability remains the key operating test for investors.
What do Broadcom’s market metrics show?
Investors sold AI stocks broadly on Nov. 5. Broadcom shares fell 10.4%, their largest single-day decline in five months.
MarketBeat’s dashboard lists several additional metrics:
- Price: $293.69, up 0.7%, with a 52-week range of $289.77 to $495.00.
- Valuation and income: A 37.51 price-to-earnings ratio and a 0.89% dividend yield.
- Analyst view: A Moderate Buy consensus rating and a $530.52 consensus price target, implying 80.6% upside in the dashboard.
- MarketRank: 4.9265 out of 5 stars and the 99th percentile overall.
- Other indicators: Projected earnings growth of 68.27%, news sentiment of 1.05, healthy short interest, strong dividend strength and no insider-trading rating.
MarketBeat separately promoted five stocks that, it said, top-rated analysts recommended before the broader market caught on. Broadcom was not on that list, and the service said those five were better buys. The selection was presented ahead of Dec. 1.
The next test is compute delivery: Broadcom’s expectation that Anthropic will become its largest XPU customer in 2027 depends on capacity additions and Anthropic’s ability to fund commitments running as late as 2036.
