Apple's 8th-Gen iPad Mini Goes OLED at $699 With A20 Pro Inside
Apple's 8th-gen iPad mini lands at $699 with an 8.5-inch OLED panel at 1,200 nits, the A20 Pro chip, a 5.4 mm IP67 chassis and 24% thinner bezels.

Apple's eighth-generation iPad mini starts at $699, and the company calls it the biggest update the 8.5-inch tablet has ever received. The price has climbed, but so has the hardware: an OLED display replaces the IPS panel of the 2024 model, and the A20 Pro chip — first shipped in the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo — now powers the device.
The release lands at an awkward moment for Apple's newest silicon homes. Some iPhone Duo screens are already failing, as Ars Technica reported in October, which makes the mini an interesting counterpoint: a mid-size touchscreen device from the same chip generation, but without the folding-screen risk.
What changed in the display?
The move from IPS to OLED changes the viewing experience more than any spec sheet suggests. Peak brightness jumps from 500 nits on the seventh-generation model to 1,200 nits on the new Super Retina XDR panel. Blacks go truly dark. And the panel can dim all the way down to 1-nit minimum brightness, so reading in a dark room won't sear your retinas.
Screen real estate grows without growing the device. The footprint stays roughly the same as the 2024 release because Apple cut bezel thickness by 24 percent, freeing room for an 8.5-inch panel where the last model carried 8.3 inches. Buyers who prefer matte finishes can option a nano-textured display, a treatment previously associated with Apple's Pro-tier devices. In short, the mini's display experience now aligns with what buyers expect from the Pro line.
How thin and how tough?
The chassis measures 5.4 mm thick — almost a full millimeter thinner than its predecessor. That's thin by any tablet standard, let alone one this small.
It's also tougher. The eighth-generation mini carries an IP67 rating for water and dust protection. The seventh-generation model carried no official IP rating at all, so this marks a first for the product family: a mini that can survive a dunking.
Why the price increase?
At $699, the new mini costs more than its predecessor did, and the premium buys three generational leaps at once. First, the OLED panel itself, with its 1,200-nit peak and 1-nit floor — panel technology the mini line has never carried. Second, the A20 Pro, Apple's current flagship mobile silicon, shared with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. Third, the structural upgrades: 24 percent thinner bezels, a 5.4 mm chassis, and IP67 sealing.
Apple frames the result plainly. In its October newsroom announcement, the company described the refresh as the most significant update ever for its petite tablet. Given that the previous model kept an LCD-era panel and no environmental rating, that claim holds up on paper.
What does this mean for buyers?
Anyone holding a seventh-generation mini gets a genuinely different device, not a spec bump — a brighter, larger, thinner, sealed tablet running the same chip family as this year's flagship iPhones, for $699 before storage tiers.
Whether the OLED mini can pull attention away from the struggling iPhone Duo is the open question. The Duo's screen failures give cautious buyers a reason to look at the smaller screen that doesn't fold. And with Pro-level display features like nano-texture glass trickling down to Apple's smallest tablet, the line between the mini and the Pro lineup just got blurrier — at a price that now sits closer to it too.
