ASML and TSMC will deliver their latest quarterly results this week, and the two reports will function as a single verdict on the AI infrastructure trade. Both companies sit at binding bottlenecks of the advanced chip supply chain, and their guidance carries outsize influence on equipment, foundry and memory valuations worldwide.

Why do these two reports matter?

ASML is the sole supplier of EUV lithography systems, the machines that pattern the finest features on advanced logic wafers. Its order book reflects foundry commitments made one to two years ahead, which means a soft guide there tends to lead the cycle by quarters.

TSMC fabricates the bulk of leading-edge logic and the most demanding AI accelerators on its N5, N3 and forthcoming N2 nodes. A miss from either company forces a re-pricing of the entire semiconductor complex. The market will read them as one statement, not two.

What will the market read most closely?

Three data points will draw disproportionate attention:

  • ASML's net bookings and any commentary on EUV system demand for 2026
  • TSMC's N3 and N2 utilization rates, which signal the absorption of recent capacity expansions
  • TSMC's CoWoS advanced-packaging trajectory, which has constrained AI accelerator shipments for several quarters

A clean beat-and-raise from both companies would confirm that AI infrastructure spending remains on its announced trajectory. A cautious guide from either would reignite questions about whether hyperscaler capex commitments can hold into 2026.

What complicates the read?

Geopolitics, predictably. TSMC's Arizona build-out continues amid persistent pressure from Washington for onshore capacity, while Taiwanese production still absorbs the majority of advanced-node demand.

ASML has spent two years navigating successive rounds of Dutch export controls on EUV systems destined for China. Neither headwind is resolved, and neither is new.

The concrete comparison

The closest historical analogue is the 2018-2019 memory downcycle. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix guided conservatively for two consecutive quarters before pricing collapsed, and equipment names moved ahead of the spot cycle rather than behind it. A soft ASML guide in particular would echo that pattern.

Verdict

Earnings will arrive with ASML reporting first and TSMC several days later. A strong joint print extends the trade. A divergence reignites the debate about whether the announced fab build-outs will actually be filled, or whether the AI capex curve bends earlier than the bulls expect.

The verdict, as ever, sits in the numbers.
