Semiconductor startup C2i Semiconductors has raised $15 million in a funding round led by Peak XV Partners, Entrackr reported.
The round positions C2i among a small but growing group of chip-sector companies pulling in institutional capital at a time when investors are looking past the industry's headline valuations and toward teams building actual silicon and silicon-adjacent technology. Peak XV, the venture firm formerly known as Sequoia India and Southeast Asia, led the deal, according to the report.
The $15 million commitment is modest by the standards of a global semiconductor industry where fab projects routinely run into the billions of dollars. But for an early-stage startup, a round of this size signals a bet on engineering depth rather than a quick software-style return. Chip ventures burn capital on design cycles, verification, prototyping and test long before first revenue, and $15 million buys a startup roughly one credible development push — a mask set on an advanced node, or the engineering headcount to get a first product to sampling.
Details of C2i's product line, target process nodes and customer pipeline were not disclosed in the report. The company joins a cohort of design-focused semiconductor startups — firms that own intellectual property and chip architecture rather than fabrication — a segment that has attracted the bulk of venture money in the chip sector because it avoids the capital intensity of manufacturing while capturing design margins.
Peak XV's lead role is consistent with the firm's track record of backing India-rooted technology companies across enterprise, consumer and deep-tech categories. The firm rebranded from Sequoia India and Southeast Asia in 2023 and has since operated as an independent entity with a large pool of capital to deploy. Its decision to lead a semiconductor deal rather than a software one reflects where the firm sees durable returns forming.
The funding lands amid a broader push to build out India's semiconductor ecosystem. Government incentive programs covering fabrication, assembly, test and packaging, and chip design have drawn commitments from major domestic conglomerates and international partners alike. Startups such as C2i represent the design end of that stack — the layer policymakers hope will anchor long-term engineering capability even where fabs take years to stand up.
For Peak XV, the calculus is straightforward. Design-led chip companies can reach meaningful revenue with teams in the tens, not thousands, of engineers, and India's talent pool in chip design is deep, built over two decades of global semiconductor firms running design centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Noida. A $15 million check placed early in a capable team carries asymmetric upside if the startup lands a design win with a volume customer.
The round also illustrates how venture capital flows in semiconductors differ from the software playbook. Chip investments require patient holding periods, tolerance for long qualification cycles with customers who buy conservatively, and an acceptance that exits come through acquisition by larger chipmakers more often than public listings. Firms willing to underwrite that profile — Peak XV among them — are effectively making a structural call on the region's engineering capacity.
What C2i does with the capital will determine whether this round is a stepping stone or a ceiling. The company now has the runway to push its first products through development and into customer evaluation, and a subsequent round — or a design win with a named customer — would be the next concrete marker of traction. Entrackr's report did not specify a company valuation or identify other participating investors.
