DeepSeek says its open-source agent app Harness reached 1.54 million daily active users as of Nov. 4, consuming roughly 92 trillion tokens a day. The figure counts only users on DeepSeek's official API. The company published the numbers on Sunday on the DeepSeekHarness account on X, and Bloomberg reported them as well.

The growth curve is steep. Seeking Alpha, citing the same disclosure, put the user count at about 271,000 at the end of September. That works out to roughly a sixfold jump in about five weeks. Harness v0.1 went live on Aug. 13, and DeepSeek shipped a desktop app on Sept. 29. One caveat: the figures are DeepSeek's own and have not been independently audited.

What's driving the adoption?

Plugins, mostly. DeepSeek said developers have built about 35,000 third-party plugins, and about 60% of active users have built or installed at least one. The company acknowledged community plugins "vary in maturity," but profiled several it considers notable:

  • a creator workbench;
  • a design plugin that turns articles into web pages and image cards;
  • a literature tool linking reference management, translation and note-taking.

The ambition behind it is architectural. DeepSeek described its goal as making Harness "the operating system of the agent era," built on an "everything is a plugin" design under which third-party plugins can replace built-in features entirely.

What comes next?

A marketplace, for starters. DeepSeek said it will improve the stability and compatibility of the plugin API, strengthen plugin security, and "build an official plugin marketplace where developers can easily publish their plugins and users can easily find the ones they need."

On top of that, the company is preparing a support program for plugin authors that includes token grants, technical discussions and promotion. DeepSeek invited startups and companies to bring their products into Harness through plugins. For now it is collecting expressions of interest through a form; participation rules and support details will be announced when the program launches.

The plugin push landed the same month DeepSeek's open-weight models made headlines on a different front. A Vals benchmark found DeepSeek V4.1 Flash came within eight points of OpenAI's restricted cyber model in a network-hacking test, according to MLQ's coverage and analysis.

Does the token burn signal a business?

Ninety-two trillion tokens a day across 1.54 million users averages to nearly 60 million tokens per user daily — a workload that suggests Harness agents are running long, chained tasks rather than one-shot queries. Whether that consumption converts into sustainable API revenue depends on pricing and the marketplace economics, neither of which DeepSeek has detailed yet.

The marketplace rules and the author grant program, when they arrive, will show whether DeepSeek can turn a fast-growing free app into a developer ecosystem with the stickiness of an app store — and whether third-party plugins can carry the "operating system of the agent era" claim beyond marketing copy.
