Huawei's Ruiying Z10 Turns the Mate 90 Pro Max Into a Real Camera

Huawei has launched the Ruiying Z10, an add-on camera for its Mate 90 Pro Max flagship that carries its own 1-inch-type, 50-megapixel RYYB image sensor — a sensor larger than any of those inside the phone itself.

The accessory goes beyond the "teleconverter" lenses that Chinese Android makers have shipped in recent years. Those products, following the approach Vivo popularized with kits for phones like the X200 Ultra, add optical reach but rely on the phone's built-in sensors. The Ruiying Z10 instead functions as a complete secondary camera: attaching it does not just improve the glass in front of the phone's sensor, it overhauls the imaging system entirely.

The device takes the form of a comically large zoom lens, as The Verge describes it — effectively "just a camera that makes phone calls" once mounted.

Why does a self-contained sensor matter?

Sensor size is the physical constraint that most limits smartphone image quality. A 1-inch-type sensor captures more light than the smaller sensors packed into even flagship multi-camera arrays. Because the Ruiying Z10 brings that sensor along with its own optics, the phone's internal camera hardware stops being the bottleneck for long-distance photography.

That makes the product a different proposition from earlier add-ons:

  • Vivo-style teleconverter kits extend the reach of the phone's existing periscope sensor.
  • The Ruiying Z10 bypasses the phone's sensors and supplies both optics and capture hardware.

Where does this fit in the market?

Chinese Android manufacturers have competed increasingly on computational and accessory-based photography as hardware differentiation narrows elsewhere. Huawei's move raises the stakes: if modular accessories can carry larger sensors than handsets can physically accommodate, the boundary between phone camera systems and standalone cameras — a category Huawei knows well from its imaging partnership history — narrows further.

The Ruiying Z10 is listed on Huawei's consumer site as part of the XMAGE accessory line for the Mate 90 Pro Max. Whether rival makers respond with self-sensored accessories of their own will shape the next round of flagship photography competition.
