Kospi Falls More Than 7% as Chip Stocks Lead Broad Sell-Off
South Korea's Kospi sank more than 7% in one session as semiconductor shares led a broad sell-off on doubts about the durability of the AI boom.

South Korea's Kospi index sank more than 7% in a single session, dragged down by a steep sell-off in semiconductor shares as worries about the durability of the AI boom spread through the market.
The decline is the sharpest single-day fall for the benchmark in recent memory. Chipmakers carried the index down. The trigger was not a factory fire or a missed shipment; it was a change in sentiment about artificial intelligence spending itself.
Why did semiconductor shares fall so hard?
South Korea's market carries an outsized exposure to memory chips. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, the country's two dominant semiconductor producers, anchor the Kospi and supply memory to data center customers worldwide. That concentration cuts both ways. When AI demand expectations hold, the index climbs on their margins. When those expectations wobble, the whole market moves in one direction.
The direction this time was down. Investors sold chip shares on concerns that the AI boom — the demand wave that has filled memory order books and lifted fab utilization — may not sustain the revenue growth already priced into the stocks.
This is the familiar geometry of an AI-driven rally reversing. Chip equities rose for quarters on expectations of data center build-out. A sell-off of more than 7% on the benchmark suggests those expectations had grown crowded.
What does the fall say about the AI trade?
A single-session drop of this size is a repricing, not a rounding error. The Kospi does not fall 7% on mild caution. It falls 7% when a consensus view — in this case, that AI demand keeps compounding — loses its grip on the market at once.
Semiconductor shares bore the brunt because they are where the AI trade is most concentrated in Seoul. Memory makers convert data center demand directly into wafer output and revenue. Any doubt about the pace of that demand lands on their valuations first and hardest.
The worry, as reported, centers on the AI boom itself: whether infrastructure spending by cloud and data center operators will keep absorbing memory and logic supply at the rate investors assumed. No company figure, capacity number or guidance revision accompanied the fall. The move was driven by sentiment, and sentiment moves faster than a quarterly report.
Is this a correction or a turning point?
The honest answer is that one session cannot settle it. A 7% benchmark decline forces margin calls and unwindings that exaggerate the first day's move. What follows depends on the next hard data: memory contract prices, fab utilization rates, and the capital spending plans of the hyperscale customers who buy the output.
For Samsung and SK hynix, the fundamentals of the AI memory cycle — high-bandwidth demand, tight advanced packaging, disciplined capacity — have not been refuted by a market rout. They have merely been repriced. The risk, as ever with semiconductors, is that sentiment and order books diverge for a quarter or two before one of them concedes.
Investors will now watch whether the sell-off stabilises or whether further doubts about AI spending drag chip shares — and with them the Kospi — lower still.
