OpenAI Puts ChatGPT Search Volume at One-Fifth of Google
OpenAI says ChatGPT handles one-fifth as many web searches as Google, without disclosing the Google baseline. The company is expanding advertising and building an interactive search canvas.

OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles web searches equal to 20% of the volume processed by Google. Adam Fry, OpenAI’s consumer product lead for ChatGPT, announced the figure at a Monday press event. Fry did not specify the source of the Google search-volume number.
OpenAI counts a search whenever a user submits a query that produces a web search. Definitions and simple how-to answers do not count. The distinction anchors the claim to search activity rather than general chatbot usage.
In many conversations, “Ask Chat” has replaced “Google it.” The arithmetic still leaves Google well ahead. A number can look decisive while remaining difficult to audit.
What does the 20% figure actually measure?
The disclosed metric covers query volume. It does not establish search-market share, revenue, advertising spend or the number of ChatGPT users. OpenAI disclosed neither the underlying Google baseline nor a method for checking the comparison.
During Google’s 2023 antitrust trial, the company argued that AI could disrupt search and that ChatGPT could compete seriously. OpenAI now appears to endorse that competitive assessment through its own traffic claim. The announcement comes from the challenger, not from Google.
Where does ChatGPT stand against Google?
Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said during that 2023 trial that Bing held about 3% of the search-engine market after more than a decade of trying. That figure concerns Bing and supplies context, not a ChatGPT market-share measure. Fry offered no comparable revenue or share calculation for OpenAI.
Who supplies the results?
OpenAI appears to use Microsoft Bing for a significant share of ChatGPT searches, alongside its own search index. Some speculation also points to Google handling a portion of queries, although OpenAI has not confirmed that arrangement. Neither Fry nor the company disclosed a supplier split.
Without that split, OpenAI’s reliance on outside search infrastructure remains unclear. The Google baseline also stays undisclosed. The traffic claim therefore stands on the company’s own account.
How is Google changing search?
Google continues reducing conventional referrals to third-party sites. It is also investing heavily in AI tools, including AI Overviews and additional generative features such as personalized results with visualizations and charts.
As queries increasingly route through OpenAI and other AI laboratories, those companies are investing in similar search experiences, even when they use different labels. OpenAI calls its version “Intelligent UI,” a visual and interactive interface inside a chatbot response. “That’s where the future of this technology goes. You’re talking to a canvas,” Fry said.
That is a product description rather than a performance claim, but it identifies the commercial target. Google is changing search presentation; OpenAI is changing the container around the answer. The canvas must earn advertising space without disturbing the usage it claims to protect.
Can advertising support an IPO?
Google and OpenAI see advertising as a potential route to profitability, with OpenAI approaching an IPO potentially slated for early next year. The listing timing remains a possibility, not a confirmed date. Fry told reporters that ads had not produced lasting backlash, and OpenAI has defended its ads in the past.
“Ads have not negatively impacted the product or the usage of the product,” Fry said. He added that most people did not seem to mind ads in the product. That is useful evidence for a business model, though not a revenue figure.
Last month, OpenAI announced that it would begin introducing images of sponsored products and services in ChatGPT. The earlier format showed only a company name, logo and link to its product. Fry said the ads had shown the company that it could do more, using the format as grounds for expansion.
No ad load, price or revenue projection accompanied the announcement. For a company considering an IPO, the missing numbers matter. More sponsored placements could support profitability, but only if product usage holds.
If ChatGPT sustains its reported search volume and expands ads without losing users, OpenAI will have a stronger advertising case before a possible listing. If usage weakens, the format becomes harder to defend. The 20% claim establishes reported scale; the business model still requires evidence.
