Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent have placed orders worth roughly $35 billion for Nvidia's RTX PRO 5500 server GPUs, according to a report carried by TradingView. The purchases land against the clock: US export controls are tightening around Nvidia's China business, and the buyers appear determined to secure sanctioned-class silicon before the window closes.
Nvidia has not confirmed the figure. Until it does, the $35 billion belongs in the category of reported deal value rather than booked revenue. The companies named — Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent — are likewise silent, which is standard practice for Chinese firms buying American accelerators under Washington's gaze.
What makes the RTX PRO 5500 the pivot of this story?
The chip sits in Nvidia's professional GPU line rather than its flagship data-center family. That distinction matters commercially. Export controls have carved Nvidia's top accelerators out of the Chinese market almost entirely, leaving workstation-class and mid-range parts as the remaining legal channel.
If the $35 billion figure holds, it would represent one of the largest single pools of demand Nvidia has ever booked from China. It would also concentrate enormous revenue risk in products the US government may restrict next.
The buyers' motives are not mysterious. All three companies train and serve large AI models at scale, and domestic alternatives from Huawei and others remain in shorter supply. Stockpiling Nvidia hardware is the rational hedge.
Does the deal survive the export regime?
That is the operative question, and nobody can answer it with confidence. The Trump administration has moved repeatedly this year to restrict which Nvidia chips may reach Chinese customers. Each round of rules has narrowed the list.
A $35 billion order is, in effect, a bet by three Chinese companies that delivery will beat regulation. Nvidia has played this game before and lost chips at the border. The commercial picture therefore splits in two: confirmed demand from China's largest AI spenders, and an unconfirmed assumption that Washington will let the shipment through.
What does this mean for Nvidia's China math?
For Nvidia, the reported orders would offset, at least temporarily, the revenue it forfeits as its highest-end parts exit China. The company's China data-center business has already absorbed repeated policy shocks, and management has flagged the market as structurally uncertain.
For Beijing, the stockpiles buy time. For Washington, they will read as evidence that current rules leak. That reading tends to produce tighter rules.
The reported figure also tells us something about pricing discipline. Buyers do not commit $35 billion to mid-range GPUs unless those GPUs are the best available legal option. Scarcity, not preference, is doing the work here.
What happens next?
Watch two things. First, whether Nvidia acknowledges the orders in its next financial disclosure, which would convert a report into a number with a balance sheet behind it. Second, whether US regulators respond by adding the RTX PRO 5500 to a restricted list before the bulk of the shipments clear.
The most likely outcome, based on this year's pattern, is that some fraction of the $35 billion ships and the rest becomes a footnote in the next export-control round. Either way, the episode confirms that Chinese demand for Nvidia silicon remains enormous — and that in the current policy climate, a signed order is only the first of several hurdles.
