Sandisk Lands Exclusive NAND Supply Deal for Meta VR Glasses

Sandisk will be the exclusive storage supplier inside Meta's VR glasses, THE ELEC reports, locking rivals out of the largest standalone VR platform as NAND supply tightens.

Sandisk will exclusively supply the storage used in Meta's VR glasses, according to a report by THE ELEC, Korea's electronics industry outlet. That single supplier slot matters. In a NAND market still shaking off a brutal downturn, an exclusive design win inside Meta's headset line is the kind of volume a memory maker can plan a fab around.

The deal, as THE ELEC reports it, gives Sandisk the whole storage slot in Meta's VR glasses — not a split win, not a secondary source. Meta has not disclosed volumes, and neither company has published a press release confirming the arrangement, so revenue impact and unit figures remain unquantified.

Why an exclusive slot counts

VR headsets are storage-hungry devices. Standalone glasses and headsets run games, spatial video and operating software directly from local flash, no PC tether, no cloud offload for the latency-critical parts. Every unit shipped pulls embedded NAND or a soldered storage module with it.

Meta remains the largest vendor in the standalone VR segment, and its hardware roadmap — from the Quest line toward lighter glasses-form devices — is the volume engine here. If Meta ships tens of millions of units across that portfolio, an exclusive storage supplier inherits that trajectory.

For Sandisk, the win lands at a useful moment. The company, which split from Western Digital's flash business in early 2025, has been restructuring its NAND output around higher-value embedded and client segments rather than chasing commodity bit growth. Design wins at the biggest AR/VR platform vendor fit that strategy squarely.

What we know and what we don't

Confirmed by the report:

  • Sandisk is the exclusive storage supplier for Meta's VR glasses, per THE ELEC.
  • The arrangement covers the storage component specifically; no other component roles were reported.

Not yet confirmed:

  • Shipment volumes, revenue value and duration of the agreement — none disclosed.
  • Which specific Meta product generations the deal covers.
  • The NAND type, density or package format Sandisk will ship — whether embedded UFS-class parts, raw NAND, or a module.

The competitive read

An exclusive win means somebody else lost. Samsung, SK hynix, Micron and Kioxia all sell client NAND into mobile and wearable form factors, and VR glasses sit squarely in that competitive band. THE ELEC's report does not name the displaced suppliers, but exclusivity in a high-visibility platform typically locks in a supplier for a product generation or more, freezing rivals out of refresh cycles.

There's a supply-side angle too. NAND pricing has firmed through 2024 and into 2025 as makers cut wafer starts and steered output to enterprise SSDs for AI datacenters. Embedded contracts like Meta's lock in committed volume, which cushions Sandisk against pricing swings — and tightens the pool of client-grade flash left for everyone else bidding on wearables and handsets.

What to watch next

The markers to track are concrete: whether Meta or Sandisk confirm the deal publicly, which product ships first with Sandisk inside, and whether teardowns of the next headset generation surface the parts. If the exclusivity holds across Meta's shift from bulky headsets toward true glasses-form hardware, Sandisk will have secured a storage beachhead in the platform most likely to define consumer spatial computing.
