Scaleway, the Paris-headquartered cloud operator, is putting together an AMD-powered AI supercomputer inside Sweden — its first Nordic site, and a clear signal that Europe's mid-tier providers now want a real alternative to the Nvidia default.
The plan surfaced this week through a WHTC headline; Scaleway named AMD as the GPU supplier but disclosed no cluster size, no silicon part number, and no go-live date.
Why Sweden?
Stockholm and the Mälardalen corridor already host Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Meta, and Google data centers, drawn by cheap hydropower and a Nordic climate that cuts cooling capex on dense GPU racks. Sweden's installed IT capacity has roughly doubled in five years, putting the country among Europe's top five data center markets.
For Scaleway — already running cloud regions in Paris and elsewhere across Western Europe — the build fills a Nordic gap the company had not previously served. It also slots neatly into a continent-wide scramble for sovereign AI compute, where Sweden's grid and political stability carry weight with EU funding bodies.
What is Scaleway?
Scaleway has long pitched itself as the developer-friendly European alternative: smaller than AWS, leaner on procurement politics, willing to ship unusual silicon. Its catalog has historically centered on Nvidia accelerators, including H100 instances in its public lineup.
A Swedish AI supercomputer extends that experiment into a dedicated GPU site rather than a general-purpose cloud region — a meaningful change for a company whose footprint has been mostly West European so far. New ground for Scaleway.
What does AMD get?
For AMD, a Scaleway win matters less for raw volume than for European credibility. The chipmaker's MI300X accelerators have shipped to Microsoft and a handful of Tier 2 operators, but European cloud procurement has leaned heavily Nvidia, and AMD's installed base on the continent remains thin.
A Scaleway logo adds another reference customer inside the EU, right as the European Commission's AI Factory initiative is funneling public money toward sovereign compute. The combination is more about validation than volume.
What's still undisclosed?
The announcement, as relayed by WHTC, is thin. Scaleway has not confirmed:
- GPU count
- Whether the silicon is MI300X or the newer MI325X
- Exact site location in Sweden
- Power capacity in megawatts
- GPU-hour pricing
- First-rack energization date
Until those numbers drop, the only verifiable claim is the announcement itself: AMD silicon inside a Swedish facility. Full stop.
The bigger picture
European mid-tier cloud operators have spent the last two years quietly diversifying off single-vendor GPU stacks. The reasons are partly commercial — Nvidia H100 and H200 allocations have tightened — and partly political, with EU funding for sovereign compute making non-Nvidia silicon easier to justify to procurement teams.
Scaleway's bet is straightforward: AMD can carry production workloads at a price hyperscalers will tolerate. AMD's bet is similarly direct: one more European logo on the customer list becomes the next deal.
The Sweden build will be the first real test of whether either bet holds — and how soon the next operator follows Scaleway off the Nvidia-only path.
