SEMIFIVE has signed a turnkey contract with Mobilint to develop an AI semiconductor for robotics applications, the two companies announced via PR Newswire. The project runs under South Korea's "K-On-Device AI Semiconductor" program, a government-backed initiative aimed at strengthening the domestic design ecosystem for edge AI chips.

The deal makes SEMIFIVE the turnkey design partner for the robotics AI chip, a model in which the chip design house takes responsibility for delivering a silicon-ready solution rather than licensing IP blocks alone. Mobilint, an AI chip developer, brings the target application: on-device inference for robotics, where power efficiency and latency constraints rule out reliance on cloud data centers.

What does the contract cover?

Under the agreement, SEMIFIVE will carry the robotics AI chip from design through the stages needed to reach working silicon, using its turnkey development approach. The announcement did not disclose:

  • the contract's financial value;
  • the target process node or foundry partner;
  • the chip's performance targets or shipment timeline.

The confirmed facts of the deal are its turnkey structure, the customer, the robotics AI end market, and its placement within the K-On-Device AI Semiconductor program.

Why the government program matters

The "K-On-Device AI Semiconductor" designation signals that the project sits inside Seoul's broader push to build a domestic edge-AI chip industry, reducing reliance on foreign processors for on-device inference. For fabless startups such as Mobilint, acceptance into the program provides a funding and validation channel; for design-service firms such as SEMIFIVE, it supplies a pipeline of customers that need turnkey execution rather than in-house silicon teams.

The robotics segment is a demanding corner of the edge AI market. Robots require real-time perception and control, so the chip must deliver inference throughput within tight power and thermal budgets — the exact trade-off on-device AI silicon is built to win.

Competitive dynamics

For SEMIFIVE, the contract extends a turnkey design-services franchise that has become a preferred route for AI chip startups: hire the design house, keep the chip architecture, and avoid building a full front-end team. For Mobilint, pairing with an established turnkey partner shortens the path from architecture to silicon in a market where time-to-first-silicon often decides funding rounds.

The announcement positions both companies inside Korea's national effort to seed on-device AI silicon. Whether the partnership yields a competitive robotics accelerator will become clear when Mobilint discloses the chip's process node, performance figures, and production schedule — details neither company provided in the announcement.
