TSMC Flags Sequential Q4 Gross Margin Dip, Lifts Revenue Outlook
TSMC expects a sequential gross-margin decline in Q4 while raising its revenue outlook, the latest signal from the world's largest foundry as advanced-node ramps reshape its cost structure.

TSMC expects its fourth-quarter gross margin to decline sequentially, the Taiwan-based foundry confirmed via Yahoo Finance this week, while simultaneously lifting its revenue outlook for the same period. The juxtaposition — falling margins paired with stronger sales — captures the cross-currents running through the world's largest contract chipmaker as 2025 heads into the close.
For the company whose fabs produce processors for Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm, a sequential margin dip against a revenue beat is no contradiction. It is, in most quarters, a tell. The pattern typically reflects one of two underlying shifts: an advanced node ramping faster than the prior quarter's cost structure assumed, or wafer mix tilting toward high-volume leading-edge product before depreciation catches up.
What does the gross-margin decline actually signal?
Sequential gross-margin compression from Q3 to Q4 does not, on its own, signal weakening demand or pricing pressure. Foundry margins respond to a handful of variables: the U.S. dollar-Taiwan dollar exchange rate, electricity tariffs across Hsinchu and Tainan, capacity utilization, and the relative weighting of leading-edge versus trailing-edge wafers. A revenue-strong quarter paired with margin softness usually means TSMC shipped more silicon, not less — just at a cost mix that has not yet fully matured.
This is the trade TSMC's investors signed up for. Margin dips arrive when 3nm and 2nm volumes climb faster than the depreciation curve on the new tools feeding those lines.
Why is the revenue outlook described as upbeat?
Lifted Q4 sales guidance cuts against the seasonal pattern, in which consumer-electronics demand softens into year-end and inventory adjustments ripple up the supply chain. When a foundry raises its December-quarter forecast, the usual drivers are AI-accelerator pull-ins from hyperscaler customers, smartphone SoC ramps ahead of new flagship launches, or HPC customers accelerating orders to beat tariff or geopolitical risk.
TSMC has spent the last three years positioning itself as the central manufacturing partner for the AI buildout, with Nvidia's data-center GPUs, AMD's MI accelerators, and Apple's M-series all flowing through its fabs. Any one of those pipelines running ahead of plan could account for a bullish revenue print even as margins compress on new-node ramp costs.
What's the broader picture?
The Q4 setup mirrors earlier quarters in which TSMC guided to a margin dip and a revenue beat simultaneously — a combination that has, historically, been followed by margin recovery once new nodes hit volume production. Investors tend to focus on the upside revenue line first, then model the margin recovery trajectory as the leading-edge mix matures.
The macro backdrop matters. TSMC's Arizona expansion, its Japan and Germany joint ventures, and its multi-billion-dollar annual capex program all carry near-term margin drag that fades as those fabs reach steady-state utilization. A Q4 with revenue ahead and margin behind is, in that sense, exactly what the company's investment thesis predicts during a heavy spending year.
The forward read from the Yahoo Finance headline is straightforward. Watch Q1 of the coming fiscal year to learn whether the Q4 margin dip was a transient mix issue or the start of a longer compression cycle. In most past instances, the former.
