TSMC Heads Into Q3 Results With 50% Revenue Growth on AI Demand
TSMC is expected to report roughly 50% Q3 revenue growth on AI demand, per a Seeking Alpha preview. Investors are focused on whether gross margin holds as large AI customers press on pricing.

TSMC is expected to report roughly 50% revenue growth for the third quarter, according to a Seeking Alpha earnings preview, with AI demand doing most of the pulling. That is the headline number. The real question for investors is narrower and harder: what happens to gross margin.
The preview frames the quarter around that tension. Revenue is expanding fast. Margin direction is not guaranteed. A skeptic would note what the headline does not say. It does not quote a margin figure. It does not name a specific node or a specific customer. Without those, the 50% growth claim is a forecast, not a reported result.
What does 50% growth actually rest on?
The preview attributes the surge to AI demand. That is plausible. It is also incomplete as stated. AI accelerators, networking silicon and the memory-adjacent logic around them have driven foundry demand across the industry for two years. What the preview leaves open is how much of TSMC's growth is AI-specific and how much is ordinary smartphone and high-performance computing recovery layered on top.
Investors cannot split that from a headline alone. When the company reports, the segment disclosure will matter more than the blended growth rate. Watch the split between high-performance computing revenue and smartphone revenue. Watch the disclosure on advanced node capacity utilization. Those two lines will say more about durability than the 50% figure itself.
Why margins are the fight to watch
Gross margin is the battleground the preview identifies, and it names the stakes correctly. Strong revenue growth with shrinking margin would tell one story: pricing concessions to large AI customers, higher input costs, or an expensive capacity ramp ahead of demand. Strong revenue growth with stable or expanding margin would tell another: pricing power holding against the largest buyers in the market.
TSMC has historically defended margin better than any peer in the foundry business. History is not a forecast. The AI order book concentrates demand among a small number of very large customers, and customers of that size negotiate. The preview does not say margins are safe. It says investors are watching. That distinction matters.
A second caveat follows. Rapid capacity expansion for AI-related products carries depreciation. New fabs and new equipment convert to cost of goods sold whether or not utilization stays high. If AI demand plateaus, the same capex that enabled 50% growth becomes a margin drag.
What the report needs to answer
Three items will separate signal from narrative when the results land:
- Reported gross margin against the prior quarter and the prior year.
- Segment revenue split, specifically high-performance computing versus smartphone.
- Any management commentary on 2025 capacity, pricing or capital expenditure.
If the company confirms the growth rate but stays quiet on margin guidance, treat the silence as information. Managements rarely omit numbers that flatter them.
The competitive frame
TSMC's position as the dominant advanced-node foundry is the backdrop for every question in this report. AI demand has strengthened that position, because leading-edge accelerator designs have few alternative manufacturing homes. Dominance invites scrutiny from regulators and from customers who want a second source. Neither risk appears in the preview. Both could shape the next four quarters more than this one.
The quarter itself looks strong on paper. Whether it is strong on margin is the question TSMC's report must answer, and the answer will set the tone for foundry pricing talks into next year.
