TSMC may take larger role in Tesla’s Texas Terafab project
TSMC could take primary responsibility for building and operating Tesla’s Texas Terafab; negotiations may reopen around a 2027 test chip and possible 2028 volume output.

TSMC could take primary responsibility for Tesla’s Texas Terafab, with a test chip targeted for around May or June 2027 and volume output sought in the third or fourth quarter of 2028. The first milestone has a date. The second remains an aspiration.
What could change for TSMC?
A November 2 report from El Fondo, citing supply-chain sources and a DigiTimes account, said Tesla could reopen negotiations with TSMC over construction and operations. It also said Musk had softened his earlier position. Tesla, SpaceX and TSMC did not immediately comment.
Earlier reporting described Tesla and SpaceX as planning to build and run the plant themselves, while TSMC might sublease part of the site. Under the reported scenario, TSMC could assume primary responsibility for building and operating the facility.
This is a reported possibility, not an announced transaction. None of the commercial terms are settled.
The parties have not settled equity ownership, capital commitments or operating arrangements. The source disclosed no investment total, fab capacity, wafer starts or revenue forecast for Terafab. The arrangement is closer to a construction punch list than a settled operating model.
Those questions determine where capital and execution risk sit. Without an equity split or investment commitment, the source offers no basis for judging how much money TSMC would provide, how much output it might control or what share of future capacity Tesla could reserve.
The project is intended to expand semiconductor production in the United States, but the source did not say whether ownership or output guarantees would change.
If TSMC takes the lead, its role would extend beyond the limited site subleasing described earlier. The report does not say whether Tesla and SpaceX would retain an operating role, nor how much control each party would hold over future production.
What is unresolved for Intel?
Musk’s earlier statement linked Intel to Terafab: Tesla planned to use Intel’s next-generation 14A process. The latest report did not clarify whether Intel would retain a role if TSMC became lead builder and operator. It also gave no wafer size or specific Tesla chip family.
Accordingly, 14A remains an option in the source, not a confirmed production commitment. The earlier reference does not establish 14A manufacturing at Terafab. The report also leaves responsibility for manufacturing delivery unresolved.
When does production begin?
On SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings call, Musk said the aim was “a test chip operating around May or June 2027” at an Austin research fab.
He described volume production at Terafab in the third or fourth quarter of 2028 as “an aspiration,” while pointing to potential advances in chip fabrication.
The dates establish a roadmap, not a shipping schedule. The source provides no monthly wafer capacity, customer allocation or committed volume.
The first target concerns a working test chip, not customer shipments or proven volume yields. The second concerns the wider Terafab site rather than the research fab. The report therefore places Austin before volume manufacturing but leaves the interval between them undefined.
The report does not assign a confirmed process node to Tesla’s own chip. The earlier 14A statement therefore cannot be treated as a firm Terafab manufacturing plan.
What does the market data show?
At 09:31 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026, TSMC stock traded at €347.00 on Lang & Schwarz. The listing carries ticker TSM and ISIN US8740391003. The source identifies the S&P 500 as the relevant U.S. market backdrop for the ADR.
The price was a time-stamped market indication, not a valuation of the proposed project. No disclosed Terafab revenue or capacity figure supports a separate estimate of its effect on TSMC.
What happens next?
The next commercial tests are concrete: a disclosed ownership and investment structure, a named builder and operator, and evidence that the May-to-June 2027 test schedule can support volume in 2028. Until those details emerge, TSMC’s larger role, Intel’s 14A participation and Terafab’s capacity remain options rather than supply commitments.
