TSMC's third-quarter profit jumped 69% from a year earlier to an all-time record, the company reported, beating analyst expectations and extending its run as the most profitable chipmaker on the planet by margins.
The 69% surge lands at a moment when demand for AI accelerators, smartphone silicon and high-performance computing parts keeps foundry capacity tight. TSMC, which manufactures for Nvidia, Apple, AMD and Qualcomm among others, has ridden that wave into territory few companies in the industry's history have reached: record earnings that still outpace what analysts, already bullish, had penciled in for the quarter.

What drove the 69% jump?
The headline number tells the story simply. A 69% year-over-year increase in quarterly profit is not a rounding error or a modest beat — it's the kind of growth that resets baselines. And it did so while exceeding expectations, meaning the market's already elevated models for TSMC's AI-fueled momentum still undershot reality.
TSMC sits at the choke point of the AI hardware supply chain. Its leading-edge nodes — where the industry's most advanced accelerators and mobile processors are fabricated — give it pricing power that flows straight to the bottom line when utilization runs hot. Record profit, at this scale, signals that customers kept placing orders faster than the company could add capacity.
Why the record matters beyond Taiwan
Every major AI chip design that ships in volume today depends on TSMC wafers. When the foundry's profit climbs 69% in a single year, it works as a demand signal for the entire stack: hyperscaler capex, GPU shipments, advanced packaging and the memory that surrounds it all.
It also strengthens TSMC's hand geopolitically. Washington, Brussels and Tokyo are all subsidizing capacity on their own soil, and TSMC has committed to fabs in the United States, Japan and Germany. Record earnings at home give the company the financial flexibility to fund that global expansion without diluting the capital it pours into leading-edge R&D in Taiwan.
Rivals feel the pressure too. Samsung Foundry and Intel Foundry both want a larger slice of the AI order book, and a quarter like this widens the gap they're chasing rather than narrowing it.
Can the momentum hold?
One record quarter doesn't guarantee the next, but the direction is unambiguous. AI infrastructure spending has not slowed, and TSMC's customers — the companies designing the world's most expensive chips — have little alternative at the leading edge.
Investors will now watch whether the company guides to another record when it details its fourth-quarter outlook, and whether pricing on advanced nodes tightens further as capacity remains spoken for. If AI demand holds anywhere near its current pace, TSMC's 69% profit leap looks less like a peak and more like a waypoint.
