TSMC Posts TWD 1.49T Q3 Revenue Beat; Samsung Memory Misses
TSMC's September revenue jumped to TWD 551.9B from TWD 331B a year earlier, beating Q3 consensus at TWD 1.49T. Samsung's preliminary Q3 operating profit of KRW 107.4T missed estimates despite a 783% YoY surge.

TSMC's September revenue jumped to TWD 551.9 billion, up from TWD 331 billion a year earlier, as the world's largest foundry reported Q3 revenue of TWD 1.49 trillion — ahead of the TWD 1.46 trillion consensus — in figures cited by Newsquawk's European pre-market summary dated 8 October 2026.
Why did the chip pair diverge?
Samsung Electronics (005930 KS) printed the opposite tape. Its preliminary Q3 operating profit came in at KRW 107.4 trillion against expectations of KRW 108.7 trillion, with revenue of KRW 195 trillion versus KRW 199 trillion consensus. The Korean giant still posted a 783% year-on-year surge in operating profit from a depressed base.
The split tracks the well-worn memory-versus-foundry distinction: TSMC's book is dominated by AI accelerators and leading-edge logic nodes, while Samsung's quarterly operating leverage is still tied to conventional DRAM and NAND pricing tied to consumer electronics demand. Past episodes of similar divergence have leaned on this read-through — AI-server and leading-edge demand holding up while consumer-end memory lags.
What does TSMC's September step-up signal?
TSMC's monthly print nearly doubled year-on-year. The acceleration is consistent with continued ramp at advanced nodes, though the company has not yet broken out wafer-size, process-node or customer contribution in this preliminary release. Whether the strength comes from N3, N5, CoWoS advanced packaging or a mix remains to be confirmed in the formal Q3 disclosure.
What does Samsung's miss actually mean?
The shortfall is small in absolute terms — about 1.2% on operating profit and 2% on revenue — but it lands after a 783% rebound, leaving the question of whether HBM3E qualification and HBM4 readiness are gating further upside. Samsung has not yet disclosed segment-level memory ASPs or bit-shipment guidance in this preliminary release.
How are European markets positioned?
The Newsquawk pre-market summary at 06:02 UTC flagged the chip pair as the central focus for the European open. The Antofagasta (ANTO LN) labour dispute drew secondary attention: management said "despite the impacts typically associated with a strike, projected production remains unchanged," while union sources warned copper output would fall within weeks.
Italy, separately, is weighing the purchase of Euronext's 63% stake in MTS, the European bond-trading platform, in a deal valued around EUR 600 million, Bloomberg reported. In luxury, US President Trump told reporters that if the US stopped buying Swiss watches, it would save USD 40 billion — comments that revived rhetoric around Richemont (CFR SW) and Swatch (UHR SW).
What else is moving?
- Suedzucker (SZU GY): H1 revenue in line, operating EBITDA higher, FY26 guidance lifted.
- Broker moves: Man Group (EMG LN) upgraded to Buy at Citi; Continental (CON GY) upgraded to Outperform at Societe Generale; Amundi (AMUN FP) downgraded to Reduce at AlphaValue.
- Macro: Swedish house prices gained 2.0% month-on-month (prior 3.0%); Germany's August trade balance printed at EUR 19.5 billion versus EUR 19 billion expected.
What to watch next
The fuller Q3 disclosures from both chipmakers — particularly TSMC's process-node mix and Samsung's segment-level memory pricing guidance — will decide whether the foundry-versus-memory gap widens into Q4 or closes as conventional DRAM pricing recovers.
