TSMC is on course for its sixth consecutive record quarter, with third-quarter profit up 65% year over year, according to the company's latest results as reported by Benzinga. The figure extends a winning streak that began in late 2022 and has so far survived inventory corrections, geopolitical friction, and repeated warnings of a silicon cooldown.
The 65% jump is a year-over-year comparison for the July-to-September quarter. It lands amid sustained demand for AI accelerators and advanced smartphone silicon, the two product lines that now anchor TSMC's leading-edge capacity.
Why does the streak matter?
Six record quarters in a row is rare for a foundry. TSMC's business is cyclical by nature, and past boom runs have ended in sharp corrections. This one has not. Each quarter since the streak began has set a new high-water mark for revenue or profit.
The durability matters for two reasons.
- Customers plan multi-year capacity commitments around foundry health. A stable TSMC de-risks those roadmaps.
- Capital spending plans across the industry track TSMC's results. Record profit supports record fab investment, including the Arizona, Japan, and Germany expansion projects already announced.
The caveat: a streak tells you nothing about the next quarter. TSMC itself has not, in this reporting cycle, committed to a seventh record. Analysts' projections for Q4 remain just that — projections.
What is driving the growth?
The report attributes the surge to continued strength in AI-related demand and premium mobile chips. These are the segments that buy TSMC's most advanced nodes and pay the highest wafer prices. Mix, not volume alone, is doing much of the work.
That distinction matters. A 65% profit jump driven by high-end pricing holds up only as long as AI customers keep ordering at current intensity. Any pause in accelerator orders would hit the leading edge first and hardest.
Notably absent from the headline figures: any breakdown by node, any wafer shipment counts, and any gross margin guidance. Benzinga's report centers on the profit jump itself. Readers should treat the finer texture of the quarter — margins, utilization, inventory days — as pending until the full filing is digested.
What could break the run?
Three risks sit outside TSMC's control.
- Taiwan Strait tension, which raises the cost of every long-term supply commitment tied to the island.
- A correction in AI capex among the handful of hyperscalers that fund most accelerator demand.
- Currency moves, since TSMC reports in New Taiwan dollars while its costs and prices straddle several currencies.
None of these has dented the streak yet. All three have grown more, not less, topical over the past year.
The skeptical read
A 65% profit jump invites celebration. It should also invite scrutiny. Record quarters are announced loudly; the guidance caveats that accompany them are read by few. Until TSMC publishes its Q4 outlook and margin commentary, the sixth record is a confirmed fact and the seventh is an open question.
For now, the commercial picture is straightforward: leading-edge demand remains stronger than supply, TSMC keeps the pricing power that comes with that gap, and competitors Samsung Foundry and Intel Foundry face a wider, not narrower, deficit to close. If AI orders hold at current levels through the first half of next year, a seventh record looks more probable than not — but that is an inference, not a forecast the company has made.
