TSMC is evaluating a potential new investment in Texas, people familiar with the matter told TradingView, a signal that the world's largest contract chipmaker may be preparing to deepen its manufacturing footprint in the United States beyond what it has already committed to in Arizona.
The report is thin on specifics. According to TradingView, the evaluation remains at an early stage, and the company has not disclosed the size of a possible investment, a site, a process node, a capacity target, or a construction timeline. No deal is final, and TSMC has not commented publicly on the matter.
Even without hard numbers, the report matters. TSMC already operates a major US site in Arizona, and any additional American capacity would mark a further step in the geographic diversification of leading-edge logic manufacturing — a supply chain that, until recently, was concentrated almost entirely in Taiwan. Customers including Apple, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm have pressed their suppliers to secure non-Taiwanese capacity, and Washington's subsidy programs have made US construction financially viable for a company whose home-market economics are otherwise superior.
Texas, specifically the Austin area, is already a semiconductor hub. Samsung Electronics has built a large fab complex there, and Texas Instruments operates multiple plants across the state. For TSMC, a Texas site would place advanced logic production closer to a growing cluster of domestic design and manufacturing activity, and would give the company a second US pole alongside its Arizona campus.
Investors should treat the report for what it is: a sourcing-based disclosure of an internal evaluation, not an announcement. TSMC's capital planning is famously disciplined — the company commits tens of billions of dollars only after securing customer demand commitments and government support terms — and evaluations of this kind do not always result in confirmed projects. GlobalFoundries, Samsung and TSMC have each at various points studied expansions that were later reshaped or shelved.
The context for any decision is nonetheless favorable to expansion. US CHIPS Act incentives, state-level packages, and customer prepayments have shifted the economics of American fab construction since 2020. At the same time, demand for leading-edge and advanced packaging capacity in the US continues to outstrip local supply, particularly as AI accelerators drive orders for both front-end wafers and CoWoS-class packaging.
What would convert this report into a market-moving event is a confirmation: a named site, a dollar figure, a node, and a production start date. TSMC's existing US commitments were announced in stages, with capacity, customer commitments and subsidy awards disclosed progressively rather than in a single plan. A Texas project would likely follow the same pattern if it advances.
For now, the takeaway is directional rather than quantitative: TSMC is reportedly still looking to add US capacity, and Texas is on the list. Whether that evaluation hardens into concrete investment — and at what scale — will depend on customer demand, incentive terms and the company's overall capex envelope for the coming years.
