VSMC has officially inaugurated Singapore's first 300mm semiconductor fabrication plant, a milestone that puts the city-state on the map for large-wafer chip manufacturing and deepens Southeast Asia's role in the global semiconductor supply chain.

A 300mm fab is significant for a simple commercial reason: larger wafers yield more dies per wafer, which lowers cost per chip compared with the 200mm plants that dominate Singapore's existing semiconductor base.

Singapore already hosts substantial chip manufacturing capacity, but until now that capacity has centered on 200mm fabs producing mature-node logic, power management ICs, and sensors. VSMC's new plant changes that profile by bringing 300mm production to the island for the first time, positioning Singapore alongside regional manufacturing hubs such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, which have long operated 300mm facilities.
