Apple launched a $299 Apple TV 4K today, the streaming box's first hardware refresh in four years, powered by an upgraded A19 chip and three far-field microphones that let users talk to Siri without picking up the remote or pairing a HomePod.
The chip is the story here. Apple says the A19 enables the AI features that define this release, chiefly the new Siri AI rolling out across all Apple platforms. On the TV, that means viewers can ask natural-language questions such as "What Apple TV shows won at the Emmy Awards this year?" or dig into production details with queries like "Where was Pluribus filmed?"
It's a bet on voice-first discovery. And Apple isn't alone — Google and Amazon have both added AI-driven content suggestions to their streaming platforms over the past few years.
What's new in the hardware?
Beyond the A19, the device carries a handful of concrete additions:
- Three far-field microphones for remote-free Siri commands anywhere in the room
- Four-speaker surround sound when paired with HomePod mini 2 or HomePod 2 speakers
- A speaker inside the remote itself, which plays an audible tone when the device goes missing
That last one sounds minor. It isn't. Apple added remote-finding via Siri and Find My back in 2023, but the feature only showed directions in the app — no sound. If the remote slipped between couch cushions or landed in another room, users were still hunting blind. Now it chirps.
Why did the launch take four years?
Apple doesn't refresh this product often, and the gap shows. The previous Apple TV 4K launched in 2022, making this the longest wait between generations in the line's recent history.
Bloomberg reported that Apple had wanted to ship the new device in 2024, but delays in launching the AI-powered Siri pushed back the entire home-device roadmap with it. The Siri delay cascaded. The hardware sat ready.
When can buyers get one?
Pre-orders open today. The new Apple TV 4K hits shelves and doorsteps on November 13.
With the A19 inside and Siri AI as the centerpiece, Apple is positioning its TV box not as a faster streamer but as a voice-driven hub for content discovery — a direct answer to what Google and Amazon have already shipped, arriving a year late but with remote-free microphones its rivals' pucks don't match.
