Apple Ships HomePod Mini 2 at $149, but Siri AI Arrives Late

Apple's HomePod Mini 2 lands at $149 with a chip built for Siri AI — but the AI features won't be there on day one. Preorders opened October 13th.

Apple has announced the HomePod Mini 2 at $149 — a $20 increase over the original, which the company is discontinuing. Preorders opened October 13th. The speaker carries a new chip that Apple says can power its upcoming Siri AI features, but those features will not be available when the device ships.

That gap is the story. Apple built the hardware for AI and is selling it before the software exists. Buyers who pick up the second-generation mini this month get a speaker whose silicon outpaces its feature set, at least for now.

What else changes on the hardware?

Beyond the chip, the updates are incremental but concrete:

  • Sound glow: the speaker's LED lights sync with a song's album art.
  • Mac default speaker: the Mini 2 can now serve as the default audio output for a Mac.
  • Surround pairing: up to four units can pair with the new Apple TV 4K for surround sound.
  • Colors: pink, green, a new shade of blue, white, and black.

Apple is retiring the first-generation HomePod Mini, so the $149 model becomes the only mini speaker in the lineup. Like most of Apple's hardware this year, the price has moved up, not down.

Why does Siri AI ship late?

Apple did not give a date for the AI features in the announcement. What's confirmed is the capability: the new chip inside the HomePod Mini 2 is designed to run the Siri AI experience Apple has been rolling out across its platforms. The decision to launch without it mirrors Apple's broader pattern of staging AI features after hardware releases rather than holding products back.

For Apple's audio business, the calculus is straightforward. The original HomePod Mini has been on sale since 2020 at $129, and its replacement arrives with a higher price, refreshed colors, and a chip that future-proofs it for software Apple hasn't turned on yet.

What does this mean for buyers?

Anyone preordering on October 13th pays $149 for a speaker whose headline capability — on-device Siri AI — arrives later via software update. The new Apple TV 4K pairing, Mac default-speaker support, and sound glow are available features; the AI is a promise.

Apple hasn't said when Siri AI will reach the HomePod Mini 2, only that the chip inside can handle it. Until that update lands, the Mini 2 is a $149 bet on Apple's software roadmap — and the clearest signal yet that Apple intends to push its AI stack into every product category it sells, starting with the devices already on store shelves.
