Google opened preorders on Monday for its $899 Googlebook, the company's first laptop built around Gemini rather than installed applications. The device reaches U.S. shelves on October 4 and lands a day later in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia.
The price includes 12 months of Google AI Pro. That bundle carries 5TB of cloud storage, Gemini Advanced tools, three months of YouTube Premium, and three months of Adobe Photoshop. Google has committed to regular updates for up to 10 years.
The commercial logic is straightforward. Google is betting that buyers will purchase hardware with AI built in, rather than run AI through desktop apps or a browser tab. The longer game is Chromebook conversion, which would move a large installed base onto Gemini.
What hardware is Google actually shipping?
Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo build the flagship devices. The chassis materials are aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber. The specifications list up to 2.8K OLED displays, haptic glass trackpads, and backlit keyboards. Intel and Qualcomm supply the processors, each paired with a dedicated NPU. Google rates battery life at up to 14 hours.
The software platform is Android OS, not ChromeOS. It runs a desktop version of the Chrome browser alongside familiar ChromeOS elements. Google positioned the machines in May as a step up from traditional Chromebooks when it first unveiled the product.
Preorders are live on the Google Store and at Best Buy and other retailers.
How does Gemini change the interface?
The centerpiece is Magic Cursor, an AI-powered pointer that acts as a conduit to Gemini. Google's stated use cases include highlighting web page content for Gemini to work with, asking Gemini whether a hovered-over email looks suspicious, and selecting multiple images for Gemini to visualize together.
The concept mirrors Android's Circle to Search, which lets phone users circle, highlight, or tap to connect with Google Search and its AI features. Circle to Search was clever. It did not trigger a mass migration to Android. Magic Cursor faces the same test, and it arrives as AI agents can already take over a computer and browser to complete tasks on a user's behalf.
Which features carry real weight?
Rambler may be the strongest of the new capabilities. The dictation feature takes messy, rambling spoken brain dumps and reworks them into readable text. It answers a genuine need. It still reads as a nice-to-have rather than a reason to buy a $899 machine.
The vibe-coded widgets are a minor addition. Gemini Spark and Gemini Live, two other features on the device, do not require new hardware at all. That gap between the feature set and the hardware requirement sits at the center of the purchase decision Google is asking customers to make.
Where does the Chromebook installed base fit?
The education market is the strategic prize. Google has said roughly 50 million Chromebooks are in use across schools by students and educators. The Googlebook gives the company a path to move that base toward Gemini AI over time.
In May, Google told TechCrunch that current Chromebooks would continue to be supported. Many would become eligible to transition to the new Googlebook experience in the future, the company said. No timeline has been given for those transitions.
The stakes extend beyond education. If Googlebooks eventually replace Chromebooks, millions of former Chromebook customers would arrive as Gemini users by default rather than by choice.
Does the bundle justify the price?
The $899 outlay buys the hardware plus a year of subscription services. After the first 12 months, the Google AI Pro component renews at standard rates unless the buyer cancels. The 10-year update commitment matches the support horizon that made Chromebooks viable in cost-sensitive school procurement.
The open question is retention. If Magic Cursor and Rambler function as conveniences rather than necessities, the renewal economics depend on whether Gemini's broader toolset holds value for the user after the bundled year ends.
Google has framed the Googlebook as the first laptop format for its latest Gemini capabilities. The October launch will show whether AI-native hardware can drive purchases on its own, or whether the Chromebook transition, not the feature set, does the real selling.
