LG Electronics has paired with Robert Bosch on automotive chiplets and, in the same breath, declared that the consumer-electronics giant now designs its own semiconductors.
The announcement, carried exclusively by South Korean daily Maeil Business Newspaper, marks LG's most explicit public statement yet on chip development. A company executive told the paper: "We're developing semiconductors too." The remark signals LG intends to be treated as a semiconductor player, not merely a systems buyer.
What is LG actually building?
LG has not disclosed which process nodes or wafer sizes it will target. The conglomerate is best known for televisions, home appliances and displays. Any chiplet work would most naturally feed its automotive component business, which supplies infotainment systems, telematics modules and electric-vehicle powertrain electronics to global carmakers. The automotive division has been a steady margin contributor and the only segment where LG has shown chip-adjacent expertise. Neither company has disclosed headcount, location or budget for the chip work. LG has hired vehicle-component design engineers in recent years, a step that gives it a starting point rather than a finished programme.
Why Bosch, and not naturally another partner?
Bosch is among the largest automotive suppliers by revenue globally and has deep silicon relationships with foundries and integrated device manufacturers. The German firm operates its own fabs in Reutlingen and Dresden and has invested heavily in automotive MEMS, ASICs and microcontrollers. A Bosch-LG chiplet collaboration draws on that manufacturing heritage and on Bosch's functional-safety credentials, which matter when a Tier 1 sells into a vehicle platform with three- to five-year qualification cycles.
Why the chiplet shift matters
The move from monolithic SoCs to multi-die assemblies is no longer confined to data centres. Carmakers want the flexibility to upgrade one die, such as the AI accelerator, while leaving the radio and I/O controllers on a proven process node. Chiplets give vendors a way to standardise a chassis of interfaces while refreshing only the silicon that needs more transistors.
What does this change in the supply chain?
If LG and Bosch move into volume production, they enter a field already crowded. Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis, NXP's radar and ADAS families, and Mobileye's EyeQ tiles all chase the same cockpit and driver-assistance sockets. Several Chinese Tier 1s and a handful of European incumbents have sketched their own chiplet roadmaps.
Where would the silicon come from?
The two firms have not said where the chiplets will be manufactured. Outsourced production at TSMC, Samsung Foundry or GlobalFoundries is the most plausible route for a first-time entrant without its own fab. Bosch already buys across multiple foundries and could ease LG into the procurement choreography. The partnership announcement itself carries no disclosed financial terms, no timeline and no production volume. A reader should therefore treat every LG semiconductor programme currently as a statement of intent rather than a confirmed fab allocation.
What could go wrong?
Programmes rarely fail on design talent. They fail on qualification testing, on the maturity of the safety software stack and on the patience of an OEM purchasing office that buys on cost per validated feature. LG and Bosch have only just begun that climb.
What to watch next
Look for the first joint patent filing, the first disclosed foundry partner and the first named OEM customer. Any one of those will move LG from declaring itself a semiconductor company into being treated like one.
