MediaTek is on track to overtake Samsung in flagship smartphone application processor share, according to a DigiTimes report, with TSMC's manufacturing support for the Dimensity lineup underpinning the shift.

The report centers on the premium tier of the smartphone AP market, where Samsung's Exynos family has long held the second position behind Qualcomm. MediaTek's Dimensity flagship SoCs, fabricated at TSMC, are now positioned to capture that spot as Samsung continues to split its own high-end silicon strategy between in-house Exynos designs and Qualcomm Snapdragon chips in Galaxy devices.

Why does TSMC's role matter here?

TSMC manufactures MediaTek's flagship Dimensity processors, and the foundry's capacity allocation and advanced-node support directly determine how aggressively MediaTek can ship premium silicon. The DigiTimes report links TSMC's backing of the Dimensity line to MediaTek's projected share gain, framing foundry supply as a competitive lever rather than a neutral manufacturing service.

That dynamic cuts against Samsung on two fronts:

  • Samsung LSI's Exynos division competes for the same flagship socket space that Dimensity is winning.
  • Samsung Foundry, which produces Exynos chips, has faced yield and capacity questions on advanced nodes that TSMC has not.

A vendor that can secure leading-edge wafers at volume holds a structural advantage when smartphone makers choose between platforms for their top models.

What does this mean for the flagship AP market?

The smartphone AP market has long been dominated at the high end by Qualcomm, with Samsung's Exynos and MediaTek's Dimensity contesting the remainder. MediaTek built its business on mid-range and mainstream SoCs before pushing Dimensity-branded flagships upmarket in recent generations.

Surpassing Samsung in the flagship segment would mark a milestone in that transition. It would signal that MediaTek is no longer a value-tier supplier but a credible premium alternative, and that smartphone OEMs are willing to slot Dimensity silicon into their highest-margin devices.

For Samsung, the loss of the number-two flagship position would compound pressure on its System LSI business. The company has already oscillated between Exynos and Snapdragon for Galaxy flagships depending on generation and region, and a shrinking Exynos footprint weakens the internal case for continued flagship AP investment.

What's the competitive picture going forward?

Qualcomm remains the flagship benchmark, and neither DigiTimes nor MediaTek has suggested a challenge to Snapdragon's overall premium lead. The contest between MediaTek and Samsung is effectively for the challenger position — but that position carries real volume, since Android OEMs beyond Samsung, including Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and others, source flagship SoCs from both MediaTek and Qualcomm.

The DigiTimes projection also underscores how foundry strategy shapes fabless rankings. MediaTek's access to TSMC's leading-edge capacity for Dimensity contrasts with Samsung's reliance on its own foundry arm for Exynos, and the divergence in outcomes suggests that process supply, not just design capability, is deciding share in the flagship tier. If TSMC continues to prioritize Dimensity wafer allocation, MediaTek's premium ascent against Exynos is likely to extend through upcoming flagship cycles.
