Meta will end operating-system feature updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro by March 2027, the company said. The last planned release is v213. Meta will continue shipping security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027. Developers can submit apps that support either headset through December 2027.
The announcement establishes a staged software retirement rather than an immediate end-of-life date. OS features stop with v213. Security maintenance follows through year-end. New app submissions remain open through December. That separation gives existing owners and developers different deadlines, even though all three milestones fall within 2027.
What changes in March 2027?
Meta plans to make v213 the final OS update for Quest 2 and Quest Pro. After that release, the company says its continuing software work will consist of security patches and critical bug fixes. Those updates will continue through the end of 2027.
The wording separates product development from maintenance. The announcement does not specify the features contained in v213. It also does not promise broader operating-system changes after March. The practical change is specific: one final planned OS update, followed by defect and security work on a schedule Meta has not quantified.
Meta has not disclosed how many patch releases it plans to issue after v213. It has also given no unit shipment figure, installed-base total, revenue contribution, hardware price, or margin estimate for Quest 2 or Quest Pro. The announcement therefore defines software support, not the commercial scale of the products entering that support phase.
How long does support continue?
Meta’s schedule divides the remaining headset life into three parts:
- By March 2027: v213 becomes the last planned OS update for Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
- Through the end of 2027: Meta continues shipping security patches and critical bug fixes.
- Through December 2027: Meta accepts app submissions supporting Quest 2 or Quest Pro.
That leaves roughly nine months between the planned March feature cutoff and the December app-submission deadline. Security support extends to the end of the same month. The sequence gives users a defined maintenance window, although Meta has not specified the number or timing of security releases.
That distinction matters because “security patches and critical bug fixes” means less than continued feature development. The announcement does not say what each patch or fix will contain. It establishes what work continues, not a detailed roadmap for each release.
Why move now?
Meta is calling the Quest 3 and 3S “now the baseline for Meta VR gamers.” The statement makes the product transition explicit. Meta shifts Quest 2 and Quest Pro toward maintenance while the newer Quest family becomes the reference point for its gaming audience.
The timing also precedes a planned hardware launch. Meta expects its new VR Glasses to launch sometime in spring 2027. Meta plans to stop feature updates for Quest 2 and Quest Pro by March, putting the older headsets’ software retirement close to the glasses’ introduction.
That sequence is a company roadmap, not an independent sales forecast. The source cites no analyst estimate. Meta has not said how many glasses it will sell, what the product will cost, or what share it expects to take. It also has not published sales or shipment targets for Quest 3 or Quest 3S. The commercial significance lies in the order of the announcements: Meta shifts older devices toward maintenance as newer devices become the platform baseline.
What does the change mean for users?
Quest 2 and Quest Pro owners will retain security support after March 2027. They will receive security patches and critical bug fixes through year-end. What ends with the v213 release is the regular OS feature stream.
Developers receive a separate cutoff. They may submit Quest 2- or Quest Pro-compatible apps through December 2027. Submission availability does not establish a publication date for every app, nor does it promise indefinite maintenance of any individual title. It defines how long Meta will accept new listings for the two headsets.
The distinction matters for release planning. App support, operating-system features and security maintenance end on different schedules. Treating March as the end of all support would misread Meta’s announcement. Treating December as the end of security coverage would also misread the company’s stated commitment.
What remains to be proven?
Meta has set dates, but not commercial targets. The announcement contains no pricing for the spring VR Glasses, no shipment forecast and no installed-base data for the outgoing headsets. It also does not quantify developer demand for software that supports Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
The immediate test is operational. Meta must deliver v213 by March 2027 and sustain security maintenance afterward. The larger test is commercial. Meta must use Quest 3, Quest 3S and the planned VR Glasses to retain users and developers as feature support closes for Quest 2 and Quest Pro.
With no glasses price disclosed, the competitive question through 2027 is whether Meta’s newer hardware and software lineup can sustain demand while the company shifts owners of older headsets onto maintenance-only support.
