Microsoft Prices RTX Spark Surface Laptop Ultra From $2,600
Microsoft priced its RTX-Spark-based Surface Laptop Ultra starting at $2,600 and topping out at $5,900 — already sold out — alongside a $6,000 developer workstation. Dell's XPS 16 Creator Edition opens pre-orders at $3,800 for October delivery.

Microsoft priced its RTX-Spark-based Surface Laptop Ultra starting at $2,600 on Wednesday, with a top-spec configuration reaching $5,900 that the company said was already out of stock at the moment of disclosure. The reveal, staged at a San Francisco Tech Week event, put concrete numbers on the AI-PC category Nvidia first sketched in June when it announced RTX Spark design wins with Microsoft and several other OEMs.
A second Surface notebook configuration with a more powerful chip starts at $3,700. Microsoft also took the wraps off a $6,000 developer workstation, the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, with VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and PowerShell 7 preinstalled.
Dell used the same news cycle to put a price on its previously announced Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition. The system is taking pre-orders at Best Buy at $3,800, with delivery slated for October.
What is RTX Spark, and why does it matter?
The RTX Spark platform pairs a discrete Nvidia GPU with the CPU, unified memory and a beefier thermal envelope. Microsoft's explicit pitch: customers run AI inference on-device, for free, instead of paying per-token cloud rates. Both the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Dev Box carry over those hardware changes. Microsoft has also reworked Windows 11 around the workload with a feature called "Execution Containers" that sandboxes AI agents. The feature will roll out to all Windows 11 users, not just RTX Spark buyers.
What did Satya Nadella actually say?
Nadella framed the platform shift in terms of orchestration rather than raw model weights:
"One of the things we realized in the last 3-4 years is that just having a model doesn't do much for anything. You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model. You need to have this harnessed layer that is able to take multiple models plus context, plus memory, and the action space."
He added that Microsoft is enabling that "not just for our apps but apps for anyone's agent. That's what the Windows platform is all about going forward."
How does the pricing break out?
- Surface Laptop Ultra (base model): $2,600
- Surface Laptop Ultra (higher-tier chip): $3,700
- Surface Laptop Ultra (highest spec): $5,900 — sold out at announcement
- Surface RTX Spark Dev Box: $6,000
- MacBook Pro trade-in credit: up to $1,000 off
Why trade in a MacBook Pro for a Surface?
The $1,000 MacBook Pro trade-in offer is unusually aggressive for a Surface product and signals where Microsoft sees its real competition. Macs have become a popular choice for developers and AI-agent enthusiasts, particularly in Silicon Valley. Nvidia's RTX Spark pitch — agent harnesses, on-device LLMs and CUDA-toolchain continuity — leans on customers already comfortable with command-line dev tools. The credit narrows the price gap between a maxed-out Surface Laptop Ultra and a comparably specced MacBook Pro.
Will RTX Spark scale beyond developer halos?
Microsoft did not break out shipment guidance for the Surface Laptop Ultra or the Dev Box. Nvidia has not disclosed RTX Spark wafer or capacity figures. The sold-out $5,900 SKU is the only demand signal disclosed at launch. Whether the platform makes the transition from developer halo product to mainstream PC silicon will depend on how aggressively Nvidia can scale RTX Spark production — a question the company has not yet answered publicly.
Microsoft also positioned the systems beyond developer workloads, listing content creation, video processing and gaming as legitimate use cases for the discrete-GPU-equipped SKUs.
