South Korea's real gross domestic product grew 1% in the third quarter from the previous quarter, the Bank of Korea said on the 27th. The figure is 3.3 times the central bank's August projection of 0.3%. Semiconductors drove nearly all of it.
The advance estimate for the quarter, released by the Bank of Korea, shows the scale of the chip-led expansion. Real GDP rose 3.4% from a year earlier. That follows 3.8% growth in the first quarter and 3.7% in the second, keeping the economy in the 3% range for three consecutive quarters. At this pace, some analysts say full-year growth could surpass the Bank of Korea's 3.3% forecast, which the bank raised in October from an earlier 2.6% projection. A revised forecast is due in the November economic outlook.
What powered the growth?
Exports and facility investment centered on semiconductors carried the quarter. Facility investment increased 4.1% from the previous quarter, driven by machinery purchases led by semiconductor manufacturing equipment. On a year-over-year basis, facility investment rose 9.4%. That is the highest since the second quarter of 2021, when it grew 16.8%.
Exports increased 2.3%, again thanks to semiconductors. Government consumption added 1.9% from the previous quarter as spending on supplies and National Health Insurance benefits increased. That is the strongest government consumption reading since the fourth quarter of 2022, when it reached 2.3%.
The pattern is unambiguous. Chip production, chip equipment purchases and chip exports accounted for the growth engines of the quarter, while domestic demand contracted.
What happened to household spending?
Private consumption fell 0.2% from the previous quarter. That is the lowest in four years and six months, since the first quarter of 2022 posted minus 1%. Both goods and services spending declined. Purchases of passenger cars and home appliances fell. So did spending on finance and food services.
The slowdown has been building all year. Private consumption growth narrowed from 0.6% in the first quarter to 0.4% in the second, then turned negative in the third. On a year-over-year basis, private consumption grew 1.1%, the lowest since the second quarter of 2025, which recorded 1%.
Why is income surging while spending falls?
The starkest number in the release concerns income. Real gross domestic income, which measures the nation's overall purchasing power, rose 3.4% from the previous quarter and 18.8% from a year earlier. The year-over-year rate is the highest in 48 years and nine months, since the fourth quarter of 1977 recorded 19%.
The gap defines the quarter. Income generated by the semiconductor boom is not translating into household spending. Korean households are cutting back even as chip-driven export income pushes national purchasing power to levels unseen in nearly half a century.
For semiconductor suppliers and equipment makers, the data confirms sustained Korean demand for manufacturing machinery, with facility investment accelerating at its fastest clip in over three years. The Bank of Korea's November outlook, and whether the chip cycle holds, will determine whether export strength can continue to offset weak domestic consumption.
