TSMC is aiming for US$54.3 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to a DigiTimes report. The figure marks the company's next revenue milestone as it scales advanced nodes through next year.

The target carries a cost. DigiTimes reports that two forces will squeeze TSMC's margins over the same period: the ramp of its 2nm process family and the expansion of overseas fabs.

Why does the 2nm ramp pressure margins?

New process nodes carry heavy early costs. Yield learning, new equipment and early low utilization typically depress gross margin before a node matures. The 2nm family is TSMC's most advanced logic technology and will move into volume production during the period covered by the revenue target.

Previous node transitions followed the same pattern. Margins dipped during early 5nm and 3nm ramps, then recovered as yields climbed and wafer volumes rose. Investors will watch whether 2nm follows the same curve.

What role do overseas fabs play?

TSMC's offshore facilities cost more to run than its Taiwan fabs. Overseas plants carry higher construction, labor and operating expenses, and DigiTimes identifies them as a second margin drag alongside the node ramp.

The company has committed to fabs in the United States, Japan and Germany as part of a global expansion driven partly by customer demands for supply chain resilience and by government incentives in host countries.

What does the US$54.3 billion target signal?

A quarterly revenue goal of that size would set a record for the company. It implies continued strong demand for AI, smartphone and high-performance computing silicon built on leading-edge nodes.

The tension in the report is straightforward. Revenue growth continues, but profitability per dollar of revenue faces pressure from two directions at once — the most expensive node transition in the company's history and a costlier global manufacturing footprint.

How quickly 2nm yields mature and overseas fabs reach efficient operation will determine whether TSMC holds its margin profile as it chases the US$54.3 billion mark.
