TSMC has logged its sixth consecutive record quarterly profit in 3Q26, extending a streak that began as AI accelerator demand reshaped its order book. The downside sits in the margin line. The company's 2nm expansion is now weighing on profitability, DigiTimes reported, as the cost of ramping a new node offsets part of the pricing power TSMC commands from AI customers.

The result marks an unusual run of consistency for a chipmaker whose earnings historically moved with smartphone seasonality. Six record quarters in a row indicate that AI-related silicon has become the dominant revenue driver at the world's largest contract manufacturer, displacing the handset cycle as the primary swing factor in its financials.

Why is 2nm expansion hitting margins?

Every new process node carries heavy early costs. TSMC's move to 2nm follows the pattern set by earlier transitions: new equipment, new facilities and low initial yields depress gross margin for several quarters before volume and yield maturity restore profitability. The 2nm ramp is the first TSMC node deployed with gate-all-around transistors, a more complex structure than the FinFET architecture used from 16nm through 3nm.

The margin pressure is a known cost of TSMC's positioning. Customers moving to 2nm pay premium prices, and the node is expected to carry the next generation of AI processors and mobile chips. Analysts have framed this dynamic as the standard trade-off in leading-edge logic: near-term gross margin compression in exchange for a durable technology lead.

How durable is the AI demand streak?

Six record quarters give TSMC a track record that few suppliers in the semiconductor supply chain can match. The streak also reflects constrained alternatives. TSMC remains the only foundry shipping leading-edge AI silicon at scale, which gives it pricing leverage even while it absorbs 2nm ramp costs.

The tension between record profit and margin compression will define the next several quarters. As DigiTimes reported, the profit streak has not broken, but the cost of sustaining it through the 2nm transition is now visible in the financials. Investors will watch whether yield improvements and 2nm pricing can lift margins back toward prior peaks as the node reaches volume in the quarters ahead.
