Two Dead After NF3 Explosion at Intel's Kiryat Gat Fab 28

Two workers are dead and one is in intensive care after an explosion on Wednesday at Intel's chip fabrication complex in Kiryat Gat, southern Israel. Police suspect a gas cylinder malfunction, and Fire and Rescue Services said the fire involved nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), a toxic gas used to clean the process chambers of chipmaking tools. Intel has so far said nothing about the victims or about production at the site.
The blast occurred during a material transfer into the plant's tanks, after one truck disconnected and another connected, according to the Kiryat Gat police commander at the scene. At least eight Fire and Rescue Services teams, including hazmat units, searched for trapped workers, contained the fire, and monitored the hazardous substance.
"At this moment, I cannot point to any suspicion of criminal activity or negligence," the commander said.
What happened to the victims?
Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical service, reported that all three workers suffered severe burns and that two underwent resuscitation efforts. Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba confirmed that one injured worker was pronounced dead, a second later died of their wounds, and a third remains hospitalized in serious condition in the ICU.
NF3 is hazardous if inhaled but is not flammable, and it remains unclear whether the trucks were delivering the gas or whether NF3 directly caused the explosion. After crews extinguished the fire, they kept cooling the scene to prevent a secondary incident. The commander said the situation appeared under control, with no sign of further leaks and no need to evacuate residents or factory staff. Kiryat Gat Mayor Kfir Suissa urged residents to stay away while crews worked and added: "There is no danger to the public."
What does the site actually make?
The Kiryat Gat campus houses Fab 28, which Intel says produces "processors, 5G, and AI products" on Intel 7, the process formerly called 10nm Enhanced SuperFin. Intel 7 products include 13th and 14th Gen Core "Raptor Lake" chips, 5th Gen Xeon "Emerald Rapids" server processors, and the I/O die of Xeon 6 "Granite Rapids" — though Intel has not explicitly linked these product lines to this specific fab.
The site's future has been uncertain for some time. Intel announced the adjacent Fab 38 in December 2023, backed by a $3.25 billion Israeli government grant, but construction has been paused since mid-2024. In July 2025, reports emerged that Intel considered closing Fab 28 altogether, though no closure decision has been announced.
Why production impact matters
Intel has not commented on possible production delays, but any disruption would land on a stretched supply line. The company's CFO said last year that Intel 7 and Intel 10 capacity constraints had limited its ability to meet demand, with shortages expected to persist into 2026 and server wafers receiving priority. A fab incident at a node already running tight could force Intel to reshuffle allocations between client and server products. In short, the accident hits a plant Intel could ill afford to lose output from.
What comes next
Intel reports third-quarter results on October 29 and will hold an earnings call, though it has not said whether it will address the explosion. The company now faces questions on two fronts: the human toll inside the fab, and whether a fire at an already capacity-constrained Intel 7 site pushes its product shortages deeper into 2026.
