AMD reported third-quarter revenue of $13.377 billion, up 45% year over year and a quarterly record, with GAAP operating income of $2.832 billion that more than doubled from a year earlier. The figures, released November 3, beat analyst estimates of $13.09 billion in revenue and $1.95 in non-GAAP earnings per share, according to financial data provider LSEG. Non-GAAP EPS came in at $2.09, up 74%.
The market rewarded the beat and the outlook. AMD shares rose 3.65% in regular trading and climbed another 7.25% in after-hours trading to $518.77 by 7 a.m.
What drove the record quarter?
The data center segment did almost all of the work. It generated $8.546 billion in third-quarter revenue, nearly double the year-ago figure. Two product families carried the demand: AMD EPYC server CPUs and the launch of the AMD Instinct MI450-series GPUs.
That mix shift changed the shape of the whole company. Data center accounted for 64% of total revenue in the quarter, up from 47% a year earlier. AMD is now, by revenue structure, a server and AI accelerator supplier first, with everything else secondary.
The takeaway: one segment moved from just under half of revenue to nearly two-thirds in twelve months.
How strong is the fourth-quarter guidance?
AMD forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $17 billion, plus or minus 3%. That represents a 66% increase from the fourth quarter of last year. The company also guided to a non-GAAP gross margin of approximately 55%.
The outlook rests on two specific production ramps in the quarter: Helios, AMD's next-generation rack-scale AI computing platform, and Venice, its sixth-generation EPYC processor. Both are volume products aimed at the same AI infrastructure buildout that lifted the third quarter.
CFO Jean Hu, AMD's executive vice president, said the fourth-quarter outlook reflects expectations for accelerating revenue and earnings growth, driven by strong demand across the company's data center product portfolio. CEO Lisa Su said she was confident AMD could sustain very strong revenue growth and expand profitability over the next several years, supported by its industry-leading product portfolio and close collaboration with customers and supply chain partners.
The takeaway: guidance calls for growth to accelerate, not merely continue.
Why did AMD and Intel diverge?
The after-hours reaction split the two x86 rivals sharply. AMD rose more than 7% after hours. Intel fell more than 20% in after-hours trading after its October 29 report.
Intel's numbers were not weak in absolute terms. The company posted third-quarter revenue of $16.513 billion, up 21% year over year, and GAAP operating income of $2.522 billion, up 269% — a bigger operating income than AMD's, on larger revenue. What moved the stock was the forecast: Intel's fourth-quarter outlook fell short of market expectations, while AMD's $17 billion guide cleared them.
That gap is the story. Investors now price the two companies on forward AI-related revenue, and AMD's Helios and MI450 ramp gives it a visible, near-term growth driver that Intel's current roadmap does not match.
The takeaway: the divergence came from guidance, not from the reported quarter itself.
What comes next?
The fourth-quarter ramp of Helios and Venice will test whether AMD can convert strong demand into the $17 billion quarter it has promised, and whether the 55% gross margin target holds as rack-scale AI systems ship in volume. If Su's multi-year growth claim holds, the competitive gap with Intel in AI servers widens further.
