GlobalFoundries has signed a five-year agreement with TSMC to source silicon interposers, locking in supply of a critical 2.5D packaging building block through 2030.
The deal, disclosed via industry press this week, runs for a five-year term and covers silicon interposers used in advanced 2.5D chip integration. Neither company has publicly disclosed the contract value, wafer volume, or specific process node for the interposers covered by the agreement.
Why silicon interposers matter
Silicon interposers are the thin silicon substrates that sit beneath chiplets in 2.5D packages, providing the fine-pitch routing that connects dies to one another and to the package substrate. They are a prerequisite for technologies such as TSMC's CoWoS (Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate), which has become the dominant packaging approach for AI accelerators including Nvidia's H100 and H200 GPUs and AMD's MI300 series.
GlobalFoundries does not currently produce silicon interposers at scale on its own 300 mm lines. Its 300 mm fabs in Malta, New York, and Dresden, Germany, focus on 12LP/12LP+ FinFET, 22FDX, and RF/SiGe processes rather than the thicker, through-silicon-via-capable interposer wafers that TSMC produces in its advanced packaging facilities.
What the deal changes commercially
By contracting with TSMC rather than building or buying dedicated interposer capacity, GlobalFoundries secures a multi-year supply line for customers that need 2.5D assembly. The arrangement is consistent with GlobalFoundries' broader strategy under CEO Tom Caulfield, who has steered the company away from the leading-edge logic race and toward differentiated RF, analog, and packaging-related offerings.
The agreement is the latest in a series of interposer and advanced-packaging supply arrangements that have tightened as AI demand has absorbed much of the world's CoWoS capacity. TSMC has guided to roughly a doubling of CoWoS output in 2024 versus 2023, and is reportedly targeting further expansion in 2025, yet demand from hyperscale customers continues to outstrip available supply.
For GlobalFoundries, the five-year horizon provides a degree of planning certainty unusual in a market where packaging allocations are typically negotiated quarter by quarter. For TSMC, the deal represents incremental demand on already-stretched advanced packaging lines.
What remains undisclosed
Public information on the contract is limited. Crypto Briefing's report did not include financial terms, annual wafer quantities, the interposer generation (TSMC offers multiple interposer families at differing line/space pitches), or whether the agreement includes any option for GlobalFoundries to take delivery of finished CoWoS modules rather than bare interposers. No executive statement accompanied the disclosure at the time of publication.
The geographic dimension is also notable. With US and European policymakers pressing for onshore advanced-packaging capacity, a multi-year TSMC interposer supply line that supports a New York-headquartered fabless and IDM customer base sits at the intersection of commercial and policy considerations, though the agreement itself does not alter GlobalFoundries' manufacturing footprint.
Outlook
If GlobalFoundries expands its 2.5D-based offerings for AI and high-performance computing customers over the term of the agreement, the TSMC interposer line will become a structural dependency for those products — one that will need renewal or in-house substitution by 2030, when the contract period ends.
