Infineon has signed a supply agreement with Wolfspeed for 200mm silicon carbide wafers, the two companies confirmed. The deal secures a second source of large-diameter SiC substrate material for one of the world's largest power-semiconductor suppliers.
The agreement covers 200mm wafers. This diameter matters. A 200mm silicon carbide wafer yields substantially more die per wafer than the 150mm format that still dominates SiC production today, and the ratio of usable area between the two sizes is roughly comparable to the jump chipmakers made when they moved from 200mm to 300mm silicon decades ago. That economics drives the entire current SiC investment cycle.
Why does Infineon need a wafer deal?
Silicon carbide is the material of choice for high-voltage power electronics. Electric-vehicle traction inverters, on-board chargers and industrial drives all increasingly rely on SiC MOSFETs rather than silicon IGBTs. Substrate supply has been the choke point. Wafer makers have historically allocated capacity years ahead, and device makers that lack locked-in substrate supply risk losing sockets in automotive programs.
Infineon has invested heavily in its own SiC capacity. The company has previously committed billions of euros to wide-bandgap manufacturing, including major spending at its Kulim, Malaysia site, where it has built out SiC production alongside silicon power devices. A supply deal with Wolfspeed adds an external pillar to that internal buildout. The specific volumes, duration and financial terms of the new agreement have not been disclosed.
Where does Wolfspeed stand?
Wolfspeed operates the world's largest silicon carbide materials business, with substrate fabrication centered in Durham, North Carolina, and a large materials factory in Siler City, North Carolina built specifically to supply 200mm wafers. The company also runs a device fab in Mohawk Valley, New York, the first purpose-built 200mm SiC fab in the United States.
The Infineon agreement therefore fits a pattern Wolfspeed has pursued: selling 200mm substrate into merchant device makers even as it builds its own device business. Wolfspeed has signed supply frameworks with multiple major semiconductor companies in recent years as it pushed the industry from 150mm toward 200mm.
What changes for the market?
For Infineon, the deal reduces single-source risk in a supply chain where substrate quality and delivery cadence directly gate device output. For Wolfspeed, a committed 200mm customer of Infineon's scale supports utilization at its newer materials capacity, a financial question the company has faced as it manages heavy capital spending and a demanding debt load.
The deal also signals where SiC competition is heading. Toyota, STMicroelectronics, onsemi and Rohm have all announced 200mm transitions, and Infineon itself has said its future SiC roadmap is built on the larger wafer size. The industry-wide shift to 200mm is expected to cut die cost per unit meaningfully over the second half of this decade, which in turn will shape pricing in EV power stages and industrial inverters.
Neither company has published the contract value, wafer volumes or a start date for shipments. Terms of that kind, when disclosed, will determine whether the agreement is a framework understanding or a binding offtake commitment.
The agreement signals that substrate security remains the decisive variable in SiC competition, and Infineon's willingness to contract Wolfspeed for 200mm material suggests capacity, not demand, will set the pace of the wide-bandgap ramp through the decade.
