A major Japanese supplier of semiconductor packaging materials is expanding production capacity in China, responding to surging demand from the artificial intelligence boom, the South China Morning Post reports.

The move targets one of the tightest links in the AI hardware supply chain: advanced packaging. As chipmakers push larger GPUs and accelerators built on cutting-edge nodes, packaging materials — the substrates, die-attach films, mold compounds and encapsulants that hold complex multi-chip modules together — have become a scaling bottleneck rather than a commodity afterthought.

AI accelerators in particular rely on advanced packaging techniques such as 2.5D and 3D stacking, which consume significantly more packaging material per device than traditional single-die products. That shift in the bill of materials is what a Japanese materials heavyweight is now positioning to capture on the ground in China.

Why build in China rather than export?

Localizing production inside China carries a clear commercial logic. Chinese chip assemblers and OSATs want shorter lead times and supply security, and a domestic manufacturing footprint shields the supplier from freight volatility and from the political friction that periodically disrupts Japan–China technology trade.

For the Japanese company, the expansion preserves access to one of the world's largest electronics manufacturing bases even as Washington and Tokyo tighten controls on advanced semiconductor technology exports to China. Packaging materials generally sit outside the strictest export-control perimeters, which cover advanced manufacturing equipment and leading-edge logic chips — leaving room for materials suppliers to keep investing where their customers are.

What does the AI boom change for packaging suppliers?

The demand signal is unambiguous. Every new generation of AI accelerator increases both the area of packaging substrate and the volume of specialty materials per unit shipped. Packaging suppliers with capacity close to Chinese assemblers — and to the growing ranks of domestic Chinese AI chip designers — are better placed to win that volume.

That dynamic has turned advanced packaging from a low-margin back-end business into a competitive frontier, with materials makers in Japan, Taiwan and mainland China all racing to add capacity. A Japanese incumbent expanding inside China simultaneously defends existing customer relationships and positions it against local materials entrants backed by Beijing's push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.

What to watch next

The scale of the added capacity and the timeline for ramping production will determine whether the expansion simply follows demand or shifts share among packaging materials suppliers serving China's AI chip assembly market — a segment where pricing power is expected to tighten as advanced packaging capacity remains the constraint.
