TSMC has reported record net profit for the third quarter, the company announced on Thursday, cementing its position as the financial anchor of the global semiconductor supply chain.
The Taiwanese foundry, which manufactures the advanced processors that power Apple's iPhones and Nvidia's AI accelerators, confirmed that quarterly earnings reached an all-time high. The result caps a stretch of more than two years in which the company has reported rising profits almost without interruption, driven by demand for the high-performance chips behind artificial intelligence systems.
The announcement confirms what the supply chain has suspected all year: demand for leading-edge silicon remains robust, and TSMC continues to capture the bulk of it.
Why the record matters
TSMC produces the overwhelming majority of the world's most advanced logic chips, running process nodes at 5 nanometres and below. Every major AI accelerator design of consequence — from Nvidia's data centre GPUs to the custom silicon of large cloud providers — depends on TSMC wafers.
A record quarter therefore reads as a proxy for the health of the entire AI hardware market. When TSMC's profit climbs, the buyers of its most expensive capacity are, by definition, still spending.
The company's results also carry weight for Taiwan itself. The chip sector accounts for a substantial share of the island's exports, and TSMC's performance is watched in Taipei, Washington and Brussels as closely as any macroeconomic indicator.
What is driving the growth
Two forces stand behind the earnings record.
- AI infrastructure spending. Cloud providers and AI developers continue to order accelerators and high-bandwidth memory support chips in volume, filling TSMC's advanced-node capacity.
- Pricing power. TSMC has moved premium pricing for its most advanced processes, and customers have largely accepted it. There are few alternative suppliers at the leading edge.
That second point deserves emphasis. In most of the semiconductor industry, foundries compete on price. At the leading edge, TSMC competes mainly with the calendar — customers wait for capacity rather than go elsewhere.
The geopolitical backdrop
TSMC's dominance sits atop a geographic concentration that governments find uncomfortable. More than 90 percent of the world's most advanced chips are manufactured in Taiwan, a point that has prompted the United States, the European Union and Japan to subsidise alternative capacity.
The company is responding with overseas expansion, building fabs in Arizona, Japan and Germany. Those projects remain small relative to TSMC's Taiwanese operations, but they mark a gradual diversification of a manufacturing base that has historically sat on a single island.
None of that diversification dented the quarter. If anything, geopolitical anxiety has reinforced TSMC's pricing position, as customers hedge their orders toward the supplier with proven yield on the most advanced nodes.
What comes next
The record profit arrives amid a broader recovery in chip demand after the industry's 2023 downturn. Memory prices have firmed, smartphone volumes have stabilised, and AI capex shows no sign of retreat among the largest cloud operators.
For TSMC shareholders, the question is how long the leading edge can keep out-earning everything beneath it. On the evidence of this quarter, the answer is: longer than most analysts expected.
The company's capital spending plans for 2025, and the pace at which its overseas fabs fill with orders, will show whether the record stands as a peak or a floor.
