TSMC has set new all-time quarterly records for both revenue and profit in the third quarter, riding a surge in demand for AI chips that has packed its leading-edge fabs, Chosunbiz reports.
The world's largest contract chipmaker — the sole producer of Nvidia's AI accelerators and the manufacturer of Apple's iPhone and Mac silicon — beat its own previous highs on both the top and bottom lines. The results confirm what wafer buyers have signaled all year: advanced-node capacity remains tight, and AI silicon is doing the pulling.
Why the records matter
TSMC sits at the choke point of the AI hardware supply chain. Every major AI accelerator shipped at scale — Nvidia's data-center GPUs among them — starts as wafers on TSMC's advanced process nodes. When hyperscalers rush to build out AI infrastructure, that demand lands directly on TSMC's order book.
Record revenue and profit in a single quarter tell suppliers, customers and investors three things at once. Demand for leading-edge logic is stronger than it has ever been. Pricing power sits with the foundry, not the buyer. And the capex cycle — TSMC's multi-billion-dollar annual spending on new fabs and equipment — is being validated by actual sales rather than roadmap promises.
What's driving the surge
The engine is AI. Chip designers working on accelerators, high-performance computing and advanced smartphone processors have filled TSMC's capacity at its most sophisticated nodes. Nvidia's AI GPUs, built on TSMC processes, have been supply-constrained since generative AI demand exploded, and that scarcity translates into sustained, high-margin wafer orders quarter after quarter.
Apple, TSMC's largest customer by revenue, adds a second pillar. Annual iPhone refresh cycles keep N-series process nodes loaded even when other end markets wobble.
The profit side of the record matters as much as the revenue side. Advanced nodes carry higher wafer prices and richer margins than mature processes, so a mix shift toward AI-class silicon lifts profitability faster than it lifts shipments.
What comes next
The open question for the fourth quarter and 2025 is whether AI demand keeps outrunning TSMC's ability to add capacity. The company has committed to heavy capital spending to expand advanced packaging and leading-edge wafer output, and its record quarter gives it the cash flow to fund that build-out without strain. If accelerator orders hold at current pace, TSMC's next records may not be far off.
