TSMC Claims Sole 5x Reticle-Size Packaging Capability, Says It Can Absorb Rivals' Shortfalls
TSMC says it alone can package chips at five times reticle size with high yields and will absorb orders if rivals fall short, tightening its grip on AI chip packaging.

TSMC says it is the only packaging provider able to build chips at five times reticle size with high yields, and stands ready to take customer orders if competitors cannot deliver.
The world's largest contract chipmaker made the claim in a statement reported by TrendForce. The declaration targets the front of the advanced packaging market, where AI accelerator designers keep pushing silicon beyond the limits of a single lithography exposure.
Why does reticle size matter?
A reticle is the maximum area a lithography scanner can expose in one pass. Standard lithography tools cap a die at roughly one reticle. Larger designs must be split across multiple dies and stitched together in the package.
TSMC says it can handle packages five times that limit. No rival claims equivalent capability at comparable yield, according to the company. Intel, Samsung and Amkor compete in advanced packaging but have not matched this footprint publicly.
High yield at that size is the harder claim. Packaging defects rise with interconnect density and area. TSMC says its yields remain high at 5x reticle, which would lower effective cost per usable package for customers.
What does this mean for AI chip customers?
Demand for giant packages comes chiefly from AI accelerator makers. Their processors pair large compute dies with high-bandwidth memory in single substrates. Capacity and yield at extreme package sizes now constrain shipment volumes as much as leading-edge wafer supply.
TSMC's message to those customers is direct. If a rival packaging provider falls short, TSMC can absorb the work. That positions the company as a backstop for the whole supply chain, not merely one vendor among several.
The claim also carries commercial weight beyond winning orders. Customers designing to a 5x reticle footprint have effectively one qualified supplier, which strengthens TSMC's pricing power at the most profitable layer of AI chip production.
How solid are the claims?
The yield and capability figures come from TSMC itself and are not independently verified. TrendForce reports the statements as company claims rather than audited results. Competitors may hold unpublished capabilities.
Rival roadmaps could narrow the gap. Intel and Samsung both invest heavily in advanced packaging, and memory makers expand their own stacking capacity. For now, TSMC asserts a lead measured in package area that no competitor disputes publicly.
The company did not disclose customer names, shipment volumes or pricing tied to the 5x reticle capability in the reported statement.
If AI accelerator packages keep growing, TSMC's exclusive reach at the largest sizes will shape both capacity allocation and packaging prices across the industry.
