Google launched the screen-less Fitbit Air fitness tracker in India on Wednesday at ₹13,999 — roughly $146, a 47% premium over the $99 US price. The device goes on sale October 2 through the Google Store and retail partners including Flipkart, Croma, Reliance Digital and Vijay Sales.

Google unveiled the Fitbit Air globally in May. The band tracks 24/7 heart rate, heart rhythm with atrial fibrillation (A-fib) alerts, blood oxygen levels, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and sleep stages and duration. It has no display — a deliberate design choice aimed at buyers who want health data without screen distraction.

That form factor targets a segment pioneered by Whoop's fitness bands and Oura's rings, though the Fitbit Air undercuts those devices on price. The screen-less category is gaining entrants fast: Garmin sells display-free trackers, Fitbit's founders have launched a new company with the Luffu Link, and Indian startups Noise and Urban compete by undercutting Western rivals on price.

The market backdrop is mixed. IDC's global wearables report shows overall wristband shipments declining, yet screen-less trackers are carving out a niche within that shrinking base. India remains a small part of it — Counterpoint Research puts the country at just 5% of the global screen-less wearable market.

That 5% figure frames the commercial risk of Google's pricing. At ₹13,999, the Fitbit Air costs as much as some smartwatches in a market where Indian brands have trained consumers to expect aggressive pricing. Noise and Urban compete specifically on undercutting Western rivals, and a Fitbit badge backed by Google may not overcome a premium price point in a segment that has yet to reach scale locally.

Google is sweetening the launch with a free three-month Google Health premium membership bundled with the band.

Counterpoint's data suggests the Fitbit Air will serve India's premium niche rather than move overall shipment numbers. Whether Google holds the ₹13,999 price point or follows competitors downward will determine whether the device stays a flagship statement or becomes a volume play.
