Google launched the Fitbit Edge on Monday at $179.99, slotting the wearable between the $-tier slimness of the Fitbit Air band and the fuller-featured Pixel Watch. Preorders are open through the Google Store now, with store availability set for October 27.

The device pairs the Fitbit Air's slim band form factor with an OLED display — something the Air lacks — for map directions, notifications, weather, and music controls. A Stephen Curry Special Edition rounds out the lineup at $219.99. Standard color options include Obsidian, Fog, Olive, and Canyon.

What does the Edge add over the Air?

The core proposition is screen-plus-band: Air-style hardware with an on-device interface. Google positions it as the middle rung of a three-product stack:

  • Fitbit Air — slim band, minimal display
  • Fitbit Edge — $179.99, OLED display, built-in GPS
  • Pixel Watch — full smartwatch platform

All three devices work with Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, though the coach requires a Google Health Premium subscription. The coach draws on fitness, health, and medical information to build weekly routines and workout plans, then adjusts them around the user's schedule.

The Edge also carries Google's Health Guardian feature, first announced at the Pixel Watch 5 launch in August. Health Guardian is designed to flag notable changes in health measurements over time, including indicators related to blood pressure and insulin resistance.

How accurate is the tracking?

Google claims concrete generational gains on two sensor metrics. The built-in GPS is 40% more accurate than the previous generation, which the company says should make outdoor run tracking easier. Sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate than on earlier generations, feeding better sleep summaries and coaching tips. Both figures are company claims, not independent test results.

Activity recognition is automatic for up to 100 activities, including runs, bike rides, and walks. Google says the device uses movement context to infer the activity and add it to weekly goals. The Edge also supports more than 50 exercise modes and can push on-screen prompts during workouts, such as a nudge to push harder or take a breather.

How does the hardware hold up?

Battery life is rated at up to seven days per charge, and the wearable is water-resistant to 50 meters. Those figures put the Edge closer to band-class endurance than smartwatch-class, a distinction that matters for buyers weighing it against the Pixel Watch.

The pricing and release cadence show Google building a tighter three-tier Fitbit portfolio under the Pixel Watch umbrella, with Gemini-based subscription services attached across the range. Whether the $179.99 midpoint pulls Air upgraders or cannibalizes Pixel Watch sales will show in the holiday-quarter numbers.
