LG Innotek has announced a corporate transformation program built around two growth drivers: semiconductor substrates and physical AI. The company, best known as a supplier of camera modules and electronic components to Apple and other device makers, is positioning advanced packaging substrates as its next structural business alongside robotics-related component technology.

The announcement, distributed via PR Newswire UK, names semiconductor substrates — the interposer and package substrate layers that connect logic dies to printed circuit boards — as a pillar of the reorganization. Demand for these substrates is rising as chipmakers shift toward chiplet architectures and advanced packaging, but LG Innotek has not yet published capacity figures, fab investment amounts, or a production timetable as part of the announcement.

The second pillar, physical AI, refers to components for systems that sense, decide and act in the real world — robots, autonomous machines and humanoids. LG Innotek already sells the camera modules, actuators and precision mechanical parts that overlap with this field, and the company is framing physical AI as a way to extend its existing components portfolio into new end markets rather than as a standalone product line.

The move carries commercial weight because of where LG Innotek sits in the supply chain. Its core optical module business is concentrated in a small number of smartphone customers, which exposes revenue to handset demand cycles and to customer dual-sourcing decisions. Substrates would give the company exposure to semiconductor demand instead, while physical AI components would spread its customer base across robotics and industrial customers.

In substrates, LG Innotek would enter a market already contested by established players. Japanese makers including Ibiden, Shinko Electric and New Chemence, Korean rival Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Taiwan's Unimicron, and Austria's AT&S dominate the supply of flip-chip and ABF substrates for high-performance computing devices. LG Innotek has previously signaled interest in glass substrates and semiconductor package substrates as future businesses; the new announcement elevates substrates from exploratory investment to a named transformation priority.

The company has not disclosed in this announcement which substrate types it will commercialize first, at what node of packaging sophistication, or which customers it is targeting. Those details — along with capital expenditure numbers and plant locations — will determine whether the pivot translates into revenue or remains a roadmap commitment. The announcement likewise does not attach a revenue target or timeline to the physical AI business.

What the announcement does confirm is strategic direction. LG Innotek is telling investors and customers that its future composition will be measured less in camera modules shipped to smartphone makers and more in packaging substrates delivered into the semiconductor supply chain and components supplied into robotic systems.

The competitive test will come quickly. Substrate makers are already racing to add capacity for AI accelerator packages, and robotics component suppliers are consolidating around the automakers and industrial groups building humanoid platforms. Whether LG Innotek converts its transformation announcement into qualified capacity, anchor customers and shipping product on that timeline will decide if this pivot reshapes the company or merely relabels it.
